An Azure-winged Magpie raises its vibrant blue tail, a likely sign of excitement, while gathering near an almost hidden pool. Captured from a low angle, this characteristic pose reflects the bird's social behavior
Two Azure-winged Magpies enjoying a moment by the pool—one splashing playfully while the other watches on. It was a delightful scene to witness as I waited for the elusive Iberian lynx to appear

St Mary’s Church, Pakenham, Suffolk - aerial photo
Seen here from the air, St Mary’s Church stands prominently on its rise above the surrounding farmland north of the A14. It’s one of Suffolk’s few cruciform churches, its layout marked by a central tower and projecting transepts — an architectural plan much more often seen in neighbouring Cambridgeshire than in this county.
The story of the building reaches back to around 1100 AD, when a man known simply as Walter founded the original church of nave, tower and chancel. The chancel was extended in the 13th century, and the graceful octagonal belfry — an unusual feature in Suffolk — was added in the 14th. Later still, large Perpendicular windows were opened at the east and west ends during the 15th century, bringing in more light to what had become a substantial medieval church.
By the mid-19th century the structure was in need of attention, and architect Samuel Sanders Teulon undertook a major rebuilding in 1849, recreating the north transept and renewing much of the nave roof. His distinctive Victorian hand can still be seen in the north porch and fittings. A further programme of repair and reordering took place between 1980 and 2007, when the tower was strengthened and the exterior carefully restored.
Inside, the church retains its Norman south doorway and a richly carved medieval font decorated with symbolic creatures — a reminder of the imagination of East Anglian craftsmen. The windows hold stained glass from several periods, from fragments of 15th-century glass to 19th- and early-20th-century work depicting biblical scenes meaningful to this rural community.
Pakenham itself is a remarkable village, unique in England for having both a working windmill and a working watermill still in operation — a living echo of its agricultural past. The church, with its blend of Norman beginnings, medieval development and Victorian renewal, reflects the same spirit of endurance that defines the village around it.

This is a multi-frame, stitched panorama I made in Southern Utah back in January. It's the pre-dawn glow behind the very snowy Pine Valley Mountains near St. George and Zion National Park. At 10,300 feet (3140 m), they always get snow in the winter - but not this much. This is one of the snowiest winters on record in Utah and we may never see this much snow on these mountains again.

It's time to get a little Southern Utah color back in this gallery! This three-frame panoramic is from a trip I took a couple of weeks ago to make some product photos of a bunch of new mountain bikes. It was a cold and stormy trip but the weather made for some outstanding landscape photography. For those of you who aren't mountain bikers, Gooseberry Mesa is a world-famous mountain biking destination. The trail system on top of the mesa is known for amazing scenery and technical slickrock riding. It's been one of my favorites since I first rode it, about 20 years ago.

I'm headed back to Southern Utah tomorrow for the annual Hurricane MTB Festival. I'm really looking forward to riding bikes and hanging out with friends in the desert, even if it is a bit cold and damp this time. And that's ok - interesting weather makes the best photos :-)

Aerial image Watchet,
A characterful harbour town on the Somerset coast, looking out across the Bristol Channel. Watchet’s maritime history stretches back to Saxon times, when it was an important trading and fishing port. The harbour you see today was rebuilt and modernised in the early 2000s, transforming it into a marina for leisure craft while retaining much of its historic charm. The red-topped lighthouse at the end of the west pier, first lit in 1862, remains one of the town’s best-known landmarks.
The jumble of narrow streets around the quay reflects Watchet’s medieval street plan, while the preserved railway line on the right links the town to the West Somerset Railway heritage route. It’s a place where centuries of maritime life meet a lively modern community — a perfect blend of history, sea air, and coastal character.
Aerial image: The Royal Liver Building, one of the most recognisable landmarks in Liverpool and part of the city’s iconic UNESCO World Heritage waterfront. The building, completed in 1911, was designed by architect Walter Aubrey Thomas and constructed as the headquarters of the Royal Liver Assurance Company.
Standing 98 metres (322 ft) tall, it was one of the first buildings in the world to be constructed using reinforced concrete, and for a time it was the tallest building in Europe. Its twin clock towers dominate the skyline, each topped by a mythical Liver Bird, the symbol of the city. According to local legend, one bird looks out to sea to protect the sailors, while the other watches over the city.
The Royal Liver Building forms part of Liverpool’s “Three Graces” at the Pier Head, alongside the Cunard Building and the Port of Liverpool Building, reflecting the city’s maritime heritage and Edwardian grandeur. Today, it remains a powerful symbol of Liverpool and is used as office space and an events venue, with tours offering access to the clock towers and panoramic views across the River Mersey.
I drove home from a triple-digit temp Southern Utah road trip on Tuesday and I'm heading out on another adventure later today. Before I leave, I wanted to share this photo from Monday evening. The day started with a cop waking me up at 3 AM with a flashlight in my face and telling me I had to move my camp. The temperature that day topped out at around 108 F. It ended with this. Life is weird and amazing. Don't forget to slow down and soak it in.

I don't know when this jump was built or when I first learned about it. But I've been wanting to shoot it for over ten years so it feels good to finally get it done. Thanks a lot to the rider, Tylar Furr, for stepping up and sending it for my camera.

Alonso, ripping a corner on the one-of-a-kind Thunder Mountain Trail near Bryce Canyon National Park in Southern Utah. There's no mountain biking on National Park trails but this singletrack gem in Red Canyon State Park is a super fun and beautiful ride. It's only about 15 miles from Bryce Canyon so it's essentially the same terrain.

This is a fun dirt jump photo but this post is mostly about how much I love my new Canon EOS R6 camera. I was hoping to test backlit continuous AF with the sun behind the rider but we got started too late. It was still a productive shoot, though. This photo was made at ISO 6400 and f/4 using the camera's continuous autofocus. Even though I could barely distinguish the rider until he hit the lip of the jump, in every photo the subject was razor sharp. I pushed this pretty hard in post, too. I love being able to confidently shoot at ISO 6400. I am very, very happy with this camera.

The season has officially changed here in Northern Utah. It started snowing a couple of days ago and hasn't really let up. Time to get the ski gear ready...

Last night's sunset reflecting off the clouds and peaks. Every sunset holds the promise of another, better day.
Powder is back! Last Friday was my first powder day of the 2022/23 ski season. We had about 14 inches (35.5 cm) of snow overnight and my friend Jeff and I were first chair on Alta's Wildcat lift. This was on our third lap of the day - a perfect powder moment at a semi-secret spot we're often the first to ski after a storm. Jeff has great form and I love the snow wave and his body position in this photo. It's pretty much powder perfection.

Finally decided to go somewhere this year .... this was a bucket list item. I lucked out with a great sky before the snow and clouds took over.
I just got home from a 2+ week desert roadtrip. I explored a bunch of new places and have an overwhelming number of photos to sort through and evaluate. This is a two-frame panorama of a location I discovered while out exploring on my bike. It turns out this was right near my regular Southern Utah campsite and I'd never seen it. Normally, I'd leave out the windmill but I'm glad I included it. This image is actually from a second session because I went back at sunset for better light. What do you think - did I get enough keywords in that title? They're all accurate, though. I just returned from one of the most incredible Southern Utah trips I've ever made. The monsoon produced incredible stormy weather and sunsets almost every day, including a couple of amazing sunset rainbows. I wasn't even planning to take pictures the evening this rainbow happened. I was out scouting a location for some mountain bike photos when a storm kicked up. On the hike back to the car, we crested a hill and saw this. Glad I was prepared.

I don't make a lot of black-and-white images but sometimes it seems like the right thing to do. I spent a couple of hours in Cathedral Gorge, Nevada about a year ago. The rock formations there are incredible. To be honest, I was a bit overwhelmed. I need to make another trip there and spend some more time so I can get a better idea of what the light does.

I was in Southern Utah a couple of weeks ago for the Hurricane Mountain Bike Festival. It was the coldest spring visit I've ever experienced. In fact, I woke up to two or three inches of snow on the ground on my first morning. The cold and moisture limited the riding options but the snowy mountains sure did make a nice background.

I'm a powder-obsessed ski photographer. Unfortunately, we're going through an extended dry period here in Utah. That means I've been forced to get more creative with the camera. This weekend, while I was skiing around looking for new landscape angles, I noticed the light on a far slope was pretty interesting. The side lighting was creating nice textures on the snow and the spray from skiers on the steep slope was making really cool shadows. I made a whole bunch of photos and this is one of my favorites. I like when a sports photo works on a literal and an abstract level at the same time. This is one of those photos.

Yesterday was dreamy. I can make more sophisticated and subtle ski photos. But this right here is what it's all about - first tracks on deep powder day. This is why I don't think I'll ever leave Utah.

What a start to the New Year - the first photo I shared in 2023 made it into Explore!
I had a slow start to the New Year but I made up for it yesterday. I had a photo job and on my way I did a little urban photo scouting for downtown Salt Lake City photos. The sunset was a dud and I don't love the location. However, the air was clear and the mountains are stacked with fresh snow. I'll keep looking for a better vantage point but I still like this photo.
