Ecuador's capitol sits at a dizzying elevation of 2,850 meters. It was built on ancient Incan city and has a well-preserved colonial center or what's called old town. The city had a very surreal feel to it, possibly due to it's high elevation.
We stayed at the San Jorge de Tandayapa Lodge for a few days during 2019 Ecuador birding trip. The lodge is surrounded by 150-hectares of private cloud forest connected to the mega-diverse Mindo-Nambillo protected reserve, which in 1997, was declared an Area of International Importance for Birds. The reserve ranges in elevation from 5500 feet (1700m) around the lodge, all the way up to 8000 feet (2500m). We saw amazing hummingbirds and other tropical specialties on the trails around this area.
