Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Murdock NE

Jordan Lake, North Carolina, USA

This is from deep in my archives. It was made with a Leica M2 with a 135mm f/3.5 Nikkor Q lens. Only a few years later, this snag was gone, as was the (here, withered) cornfield. So the prevailing mood of decay and death was born out by events. It's all probably condos by now.

A sculpture at Stourhead House and Gardens, Wiltshire.

Out for a Sunday drive and noticed the signpost for Ebenezer. I had heard about this historic little church but had never visited before.

First time behind the camera in a while having fractured my finger a few weeks ago. Forgot to check my ISO in all my eagerness so a bit noisy. (I guess these things happen!)

This tiny church is the oldest church in Australia, being built in 1809 by 8 families who arrived in the country together on the ship the "Coromandel" in 1802, and subsequently settled together . The small town of Ebenezer is on Hawkesbury River. The families prized education and also pioneered schooling in the colony beginning a school in 1810.

This was my entry for our Wakering Photography Group December’s 10” X 8” printed challenge, the theme being “Candle/Candles”

My friend Dave Sutton was kind enough to pose for me as Ebenezer Scrooge.

I collected the props I needed with the help of my friend Dave Denby who kindly 3D printed the candle stick holder.

I was really pleased with the outcome, I thought the time effort and location culminated in a realistic scene.

“You may be an undigested bit of beef, a blot of mustard, a crumb of cheese, a fragment of an underdone potato.

There’s more of gravy than of grave about you, whatever you are!”

Wishing all a happy and safe end to 2020 and hoping for a much better 2021.

Comments are off for the rest of the year

"Pennsylvember" is one of my favorite times of the year. Overnight winds left trees bare after one of the brightest autumn color shows we have seen in recent years. Now, as winter approaches, sunny November days tease us with scenes like this.

Took a kayak tour with (Savannah Canoe & Kayak) along Ebenezer Creek. Here we are paddling amongst cypress & tupelo trees in a black water swamp in Rincon, GA.

There is one grave that stands out a little from the others in the peaceful churchyard of All Saints in Darfield. It seems slightly better tended with a fresh coat of paint on its iron railings. This is the grave of Ebenezer Elliott.

Known as the Corn Law Rhymer, Elliott was a vociferous champion of the industrial poor and critic of the Corn Laws (or Bread Tax) at a time of great political upheaval.

One of the five Methodist chapels known to have existed in Rosedale. The large white building to the right was once the local shop in Updale, the western branch of upper Rosedale, and is now an up-market relaxation and wellbeing centre called The Tree.

Back in May 2006, someone brought this little dog into the vet clinic where my wife works. The dog had only about two weeks at best to live so we brought him home to care for him and make his last days as comforting as possible. Now it's six months later and he is still alive!

It is an immense amphitheater composed of a forest of stones with ocher and pink silhouettes. These rock formations rising from the ground like reddish stalactites are called Hoodoos, or Fairy Chimneys. The erosion of repeated cycles of freezing and thawing shaped the rocks in the plateau of the "Grand Staircase" originating in the Grand Canyon.

Decreted National Monument in 1923 and National Park in 1928, the park is located between 2400 and 2740 m. It is crossed by a panoramic road of about thirty kilometers and extends over 145 km2. Bryce Canyon is a true paradise for visitors and photographers.

-Ebenezer Scrooooge!...

-Who...who are you?...

-In life I was your partner, Jacob Marley!

-But...you died seven years ago...

-Don't you believe me?

-I...I believe you...but what are these chains on you?

-I wear the chain I forged in life! I made it link by link with my greed! But this is nothing compared to the chain you are making Ebenezer! It is a monstrous one!

-Oh no!...speak comfort to me Jacob...

-I am here to warn you that you have yet a chance of escaping my fate!

-Tell me, what must I do?...

Loudoun County has some very picturesque old churches. Service was being held when I snapped this shot.
