The flying-buttress-clad chapterhouse of Lincoln cathedral, in Lincolnshire.

Largely replacing an 11th century cathedral that was destroyed by earthquake in the 13th century, most of Lincoln cathedral's gothic hulk dates from the late 1300s. The chapterhouse is built around a large central column, producing unusual vaulting.

The great central tower of Lincoln cathedral, in Lincolnshire.

Largely replacing an 11th century cathedral that was destroyed by earthquake in the 13th century, most of Lincoln cathedral's gothic hulk dates from the late 1300s, when large wooden spires sat atop each of the three towers and were not exceeded in height until the construction of the Washington monument 500 years later (though the spires themselves were destroyed in a storm in 1549).

Two-shot HDR in black and white, taken with a Nikon D7000 and a Nikkor AFS DX 18-200mm F/3.5-5.6G lens, blended in Photomatix, with a red-filtered black and white effect applied in Google Picasa, then processed in GIMP and Photoscape.

4L38 EAST MIDLANDS GATEWAY (DBC) to FELIXSTOWE CENTRAL DBS. Class 66 in DB red livery slowly snakes its way out of East Midlands Gateway. Once the Container train is out of the Sidings, it will run the short distance to Castle Donnington where the loco will then run around the consist before heading south to Felixstowe. Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station stands in the background dwarfing the surrounding scenery but with the demise in Coal power this like many other coal powered stations may soon be demolished, the reason why I wanted to capture this moment in time.

A slightly spicy frieze on the walls of Lincoln cathedral, in Lincolnshire.

The 12th century carved Norman frieze runs across the facade of the Western front of the cathedral. Each panel is around a metre tall, and depict messages from both Old and the New Testaments, along with scenes from Heaven and Hell.

Statues of Edward I and his queen, Eleanor of Castile, on the walls of Lincoln cathedral, in Lincolnshire.

Edward I ("Edward Longshanks") and Eleanor's 36-year marriage was one of the strongest in the history of the English crown. Eleanor's death at 49 years old left Edward in deep mourning. Her body was interred at Lincoln cathedral before travelling back to Winchester over 12 nights, with each overnight stopping place marked by a mourning cross.
