Public art project "Mapping Resistance: The Young Lords in El Barrio" depicts the activist history of the Young Lords in East Harlem. Using the photography of Hiram Maristany, one of the original members of the group and their official photographer - the historic photos were installed at the same locations where the events took place 50 years ago. The project was organized by artist Miguel Luciano.

The mural refers to the gift of inspiration and depicts the New York/Puerto Rican author Nicholasa Mohr. She lives nearby and is one of the first widely published Latina authors in the US. The mural is part of the MonumentArt project completed in 2015 - I think there were 8 murals completed by 11 artists in East Harlem and The Bronx
A wonderful mural at a public school in East Harlem. Usually this mural is behind a locked gate but today the gates of hell were open and this sun certainly shines.

The next Street Photography Workshop is all new and takes place in El Barrio/East Harlem on Sunday 21 May. I do love this neighborhood and the street photography is fabulous. If you've taken my Harlem Street Photography Workshop in the past when it included some of El Barrio, not to worry. The majority of this workshop is in a different area. Either way, this workshop has something for everyone no matter your level as I work with each person on an individual basis as well as working with the group. There are only a few spaces still available. This photo was taken 16 April 2017 during a workshop in El Barrio. www.shootnewyorkcity.com/blog/2017/5/15/candy-and-soda
