Heathrow memories - back to the 80s 😎 a bit of a double-act going on here, with luxury jet V8-UHM heading for the VIP area over in cargo, where another American 727 sits already parked identity anyone? UPDATE - thanks to Irish251 for the gen below - mystery jet is Tenneco (Tennessee Gas Transmission Co.) Boeing 727-31 N505T - an ex-TWA short-bodied 727.

So over a relatively short period, one June afternoon in 1985, I shot 24 frames and managed to capture this huge variety of aircraft and airlines:

You wouldn't know it from this photo, but V8-UHM was an ex-Lufthansa / Condor machine D-ABIQ - retired from the airline in 1982 and converted to an executive jet. Between 1982 and 1985, the aircraft was registered VR-BHP, VR-UHM, VS-UHM, V8-UHM and V8-BG1!

D-ABIQ

Boeing 727-30

18371 / 145

Lufthansa / Condor

New to Lufthansa as D-ABIQ in 1965. Transferred to Condor in 1968. To Jet Aviation as N727CH then reregistered as VR-BHP in 1982. To the Brunei Government as VR-UHM in 1983. Reregistered as VS-UHM then V8-UHM in 1984, V8-BG1 in 1985 and V8-BG2 in 1989. To the Sultan as Pahang as 9M-SAS in 1992, Aimes Company as 5B-DBE in 1995, One Charter as N134AS in 2006 and Congo Government as 9Q-CMC in 2007. Impounded at Faro in 2007.

Information courtesy of Paul via Munich-Riem Aviation + the following: additional information from SAN on airhistory.net: The aircraft was used in March 2007 by Jean-Pierre Bemba to flee Kinshasa after he lost the presidential elections. Faro is as far as he went, and this old glory is stored there since then.

The film

From around 1983-84 I largely stopped using Kodachrome slide film in favour of the cheaper option of colour print film of various brands and qualities! On this occasion, I was using Kodak CP-100 film. The quality doesn't compare very well with Kodachrome, but cash was tight in them there days 😅

Taken with a Soviet made Zenith TTL camera and 300mm lens. From an original negative, scanned with minimal digital adjustment.

"S/N" is the aircraft's serial number. "L/N" is a Boeing code denoting what order the airframe came off the production line. "F/N" refers to an individual airline's fleet numbering system. Not all airlines use a fleet number; not all manufacturers use a line number.

Operated by Air Operations of Europe (Air Ops) for Tajikistan Intl Airlines. Yes, it's ex TWA and the colours painted over the TWA red looked as though they had been painted by hand with a 6" brush.

This aircraft was delivered to TWA Trans World Airlines as N31010 in May-73. It was sold to Electra Aviation Ltd in Jan-89 and leased back to TWA. Electra Aviation sold it to ING Aviation Lease in Jun-92 while the lease to TWA continued.

The aircraft was stored at Mojave, CA, USA in Jul-92 and returned to ING Aviation Lease in Nov-92. The aircraft remained stored until it was leased to Air Operations of Europe (Air Ops) as SE-DPV in Oct-93.

The airline was sold to Debutanten 1002 AB in Nov-93 (but they sold it back to ING in Apr-95) while the lease to Air Ops continued. The aircraft was wet-leased to Impala Air between Mar-94/Jan-95 and then to Tajikistan International Airlines between Feb/Apr-95.

It was returned to ING Aviation Lease in Jan-96 and immediately sold to Astra Aviation Ltd and stored. The aircraft was leased to TBG Airways (a 'paper' airline) in Jun-96 and operated by Aer Turas (Ireland) as EI-TBG two days later with billboard 'TBG' titles.

It was wet-leased to Air Malta in early Apr-97 but returned to Aer Turas and TBG Airways three weeks later. The aircraft was returned to Astra Aviation Ltd in May-97 and permanently retired at Bournemouth, UK, in Aug-97. It was broken up there in Mar-98.

Note: Air Operations of Europe, known as Air Ops, was started on behalf of ING Aviation Leasing, part of the Dutch bank, ING, in Sep-93. The bank had acquired several Lockheed L1011 Tristars following a bankruptcy and were finding them difficult to sell or lease. Air Ops didn't do very well at all and had been in financial difficulties right from the start. ING had tried to sell the airline a few times without success, which resulted in them closing Air Ops down in May-96, leaving three Tristars parked at Manchester, UK.
