Since 1983 ESA astronauts have been taking part in numerous missions onboard the US space shuttle and the Russian MIR station, gaining a wealth of experience in many disciplines.
In 1998, the European Astronaut Centre was established in Germany to prepare European astronauts for missions to the International Space Station, ISS. Most have already flown on missions to the ISS, playing a vital role in the assembly and operation of key elements of the station.
They also carry out research in life sciences, human physiology and materials science in microgravity conditions, delivering results that cannot be achieved here on Earth. Such studies can help us in many areas on Earth, from understanding the causes of diseases or developing techniques for their prevention and treatment, to the introduction of new manufacturing processes.
In May 2009 six new astronauts were recruited to join the European Astronaut Corps to prepare for the next generation of human spaceflight and exploration. They will start training at the EAC in Cologne to prepare for future missions to the ISS, the Moon and beyond.

A fotografia e a palavra
O conhecimento dos gostos de cada um pelas diversas formas de expressão artística, como são a fotografia e a poesia, levou a que estes dois colegas, André Dias e José F. Caninhas, propusessem à direcção desta escola a realização da presente mostra; há, na opinião dos autores, uma certa musicalidade na comunhão destas duas plásticas.
Um professor recém-chegado a esta escola, na procura de uma integração na comunidade educativa, encontra no colega, natural desta comunidade, a possibilidade de encetar um diálogo fora do conhecimento académico, a fim de que essa integração fosse mais abrangente e autêntica - um é professor de Educação Física e o outro é de Matemática. Dois caminhos diferentes, um convívio que irá forçosamente desembocar numa cultura de escola mais enriquecida.
Os autores pensam que é nesta troca de ideais circundantes aos saberes académicos que a cultura de escola se engrandece e se desenvolve harmoniosamente. A mesma troca possibilitará, também, aos docentes um desenvolvimento colaborativo na sua profissionalidade.
Um conjunto de excertos poéticos guardados no tempo – alguns já publicados, outros originais – acompanha um conjunto de registos fotográficos de realidades escolares vividas ao longo deste ano lectivo de 2008/2009.
O passado e o presente na comunhão de um registo intemporal.
A entrega pública que agora se dá, resulta da harmonia convivêncial destes dois docentes e faz nascer um produto que, humildemente, enriquecerá a nossa cultura de escola.

ESA hosted the Living Planet Symposium on 13–17 May 2019 in Milan, Italy.
The event brought together scientists and users to present their latest findings on Earth’s environment and climate derived from satellite data. It provided an opportunity to introduce missions in development from ESA – such as the Sentinels, Earth Explorers and meteorological missions – as well as from national space agencies.
It was the world’s biggest conference on Earth observation to date.
Covered scientific themes include oceanography, solid Earth and geodesy, atmosphere, climate and meteorology, the cryosphere, hazards, methodologies and products, near-Earth environment and land applications. Special sessions were dedicated to ESA programmes and initiatives, including the Climate Change Initiative and other international cooperation initiatives, as well as the Copernicus environmental monitoring programme.
The symposium followed the previous ones held in Prague (2016), Edinburgh (2013), Bergen (2010), Montreux (2007) and Salzburg (2004).
