Als vor mehr als 1200 Jahren die Sachsenstämme des nördlichen Harzvorlands missioniert wurden, entstand wahrscheinlich auf dem langgestreckten Hügel südlich der St. Wipertikirche eine erste (hölzerne?) Missionskapelle.
Davon ist heute nichts mehr zu finden...
Um 850 gründeten Hersfelder Benediktiner das Missionskloster St. Wiperti (Wigbert)...
Otto der Erlauchte, der Vater Heinrichs I., erwarb zwischen 902 und 912 dieses Kloster und wandelte es in ein herzogliches Gut der Luidolfinger um. Aus dieser Zeit wurden bei archäologischen Grabungen Reste einer Saalkirche gefunden.
Um 950 wurde eine neue Kirche ... errichtet. Ausgrabungen von 1955 lassen auf eine kreuzförmige Basilika bereits in den Ausmaßen der heutigen Kirche schließen.
In diese hinein wurde dann auch die Krypta eingebaut, die ich euch gestern zeigte.
1336 wurden große Teile des Gebäudes, darunter die Türme und der Kreuzgang zerstört. Herzog Otto von Braunschweig zwang jedoch die Bürger dazu, beides wieder aufzubauen.
Der Chorraum wurde verlängert und weitere gotische Umbauten erfolgten.
Auf diesem Bild seht ihr den romanischen Taufstein, die gleichfalls romanische Säulenhalle und im Zentrum des Hintergrunds das bereits gotisch ausgeführte Fenstertrio des Chores.
