It looked clean, honest!

Day 132 - F and a bit

It was Guitar Day today and it was about time for some loud music again, after my buddy Daniel and I skipped it last week. So while I had the guitar out of its case, I thought I take a picture of it. This is the last fret on the fretboard and about the highest note I can play on this thing. The guitar is tuned to D, so the 24th fret on the high D string is a D, pulled up to E and with a little margin for error it's about an F... Thanks for the corrections in the comments!

My fathers truthful red Fender Stratocaster. He bought it directly after he went on his favorite band consert (also my favorite), Pink floyds P.U.L.S.E. He has customised it so he has exactly the same setup as David Gilmore, EMG pickups for example.

My custom Jazz I've built around a nice American Fender neck and one piece Alder body. EMG pickups, Schaller 3D bridge. All other hardware genuine Fender. Natural gunstock finish. Fret skim and set up by Matt Ryan of Milnrow.

My new pride and joy.

A black Jackson Dinky. It's a cheap ass axe made for young shredders but it has amazing Jazz and Woman tones.

One of the EMG pickups on my new/used Jackson guitar. Great sustain and it bloody well screams. I think the dust is cocaine.

Recently I noticed half of the pickup didn't work on my beloved old 1987 Fender Precision Bass (I've been the only owner).. So tonight I took it apart to fix it and put on new strings.

Back in early 1994 I had Precision Guitar install an EMG pickup. I was under the impression I was buying a regular passive pickup. And when I went to pick it up and pay them they didn't tell me any different, and there was no battery cover on the back, so I thought all was good.

So tonight I noticed the mess they made under the pick guard.. They routed some of the body out so they could stuff a 9-volt battery wrapped in electrical tape in there. Since they never told me they decided (on their own) to install an active pickup I never knew, so I never checked it or changed it. (They don't last forever, and they knew this)

So tonight I find a heavily corroded battery in there, and it's so corroded I can't even detach it from the clip. At this point I am assuming the corrosion finally got bad enough in recent years that the rust/junk is no longer conducting electricity.

What really irritates me is that if the tech was going to dig out some wood with the router, why the hell not rout a small hole in the back and install a proper battery box so someone can access to change the battery?

In this video Rick from GuitarHangar.com talks about the Epiphone Les Paul 7 String by giving you some sound samples through a Mesa Boogie express 5:50 cab.

Description:

You will not find to many of these guitars in the shape this one is in! Not only is a limited edition guitar, the Epi les Paul 7 string has had the EMG pickup upgrade as well as the electronics to give her a killer sound.

Featuring chrome tuners, Rosewood fretboard with crown inlays, 2 volume, 2 tone and 3 way switch, a mahongany body and maple top, set neck and chrome hardware. Made in Korea

This guitar is in excellent shape, plays great and its ready to rock. Coming in at just above 9 lbs, she is ready to ship!

Brief Epiphone History:

In the early 1970s, Epiphone began to manufacture instruments in Japan. From the 1980s, Epiphones were manufactured mainly in Korea but also in Japan by contractors licensed by Gibson. One of these contractors was Samick, which also built instruments under license for other brands and in its own name. The brand was primarily used to issue less expensive versions of classic Gibson models.

These guitars were constructed using different woods usually Nyatoh, for example, instead of Mahogany, were fastened with epoxies rather than wood-glues, and were finished in hard, quick-to-apply polyester resin rather than the traditional nitro-cellulose lacquer used by Gibson.

Nitro-cellulose lacquers are applied very thinly, and as a result, do not impede the resonance of the instrument as much as resin finishes do. Nitro-cellulose, being a solvent-based lacquer , requires many more very thin coats, resulting in a lighter thinner finish because of much more hand-applied cutting and polishing. It is therefore much more time-consuming and consequently expensive to apply. Resin finishes are much quicker and cheaper to apply. These particular budget considerations, along with others such as plastic nuts and cheaper hardware and pickups, allow for a more affordable instrument.

In 2002, Gibson opened a factory in Qingdao, China, which manufactures Epiphone guitars. With few exceptions, Epiphones are now built only in the Qingdao factory.

Unique Epiphone models, including the Emperor, Zephyr, Riviera and Sheraton, are built to higher quality standards than the company's "Gibson copy" line. Epiphone also produces a range of higher quality instruments under the "Elitist Series" moniker, which are built in Japan. The "Masterbuilt" acoustics are manufactured in Qingdao. My old Fender Precision bass. Bought it back on November 20, 1990. She's all original, except for the EMG pickup I had installed back in 1994.

From the serial number it appears to be a 1987 bass, but I bought it brand new (It even smelled new at the time!) back in 1990.

Blacked out hardware and 3 EMG pickups.

Updated body shot of my first rebuild attempt (original here) - the bulletproof '72 Precision I picked up almost 20 years ago. The original blonde woodgrain finish on the body was hand-restored by myself- the chap who owned it before me had dunked it with horrid yellow housepaint. This was actually a blessing in disguise, as it preserved the original wood from damage, so with a little fresh lacquer and touch-ups, it was almost pristine after I stripped the yellow sludge off and buffed it out. The neck had also been defretted as a Jaco-style fretless (why this was done on a maple neck I have no fucking idea!), so it had to be 'retoothed' to complete the restoration. Proud to have this beauty back in my A-list arsenal.

(full list 'o mods: EMG pickups w/custom preamp (volume, concentric bass/treble EQ), Badass II bridge, Hipshot D-tuner on the E string, replacement Gotoh tuners for the A/D/G strings).

Edible hardware:2 EMG pickups and tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpeice...all done in fondant and gumpaste strings are just grey thread

Zakk Wylde custom bulls-eye Les Paul Gibson guitar CAKE!

almost ENTIRLY edible.. with the exception of a few small wooden peices for supporting the neck.. -the neck is also modeling chocolate / rice cereal treat and melted chocolate / fondant and gumpaste. the rest of the cake is actual cake and cake filling, plus fondant and a few gumpaste peices that replicate the hardware.. the guitar strings are cotton thread.

One of only 250 made, built in April, 1988. I discovered, quite by accident, that this SG's EMG pickups are active. A 9v battery is hidden under the pick guard. This battery lasts a long time. I'd owned this guitar for some 14 or 15 years when the battery finally gave out. I noticed it as a large drop in volume and at first was worried that my guitar was in need of repair. But it was pointed out to me that those EMGs are active and the guitar had a battery hiding somewhere. Well, there was no battery hiding behind the back cover, so that left the pickguard. And sure enough, there it was.

I didn't think I would like these EMG pickups, but I was pleased to find out that I was very wrong. These are very nice pickups, and they give this SG a great vintage Gibson sound.

Was lookin up a shot of chris storey on google and came across my shot from a live show they did last year. But it wasnt linked from flickr but from EMG's website which was pretty cool. So I guess I can say I've been published now :D

Here's the shot.

This past Tuesday, my house was broken into while I was at work.

Among many other things the following were stolen:

My cameras (which are like my children)

Sony Cybershot F717 Serial number: 1451221 color: silver, Carl Zeis lense

Sony Cybershot DSC-R1 serial number: S0135097950 color black Carl Zeis lense

Along with some prized basses:

One US Masters 5 string bass (circa early 1990's)

details: sperzel tuners, dual humbuckers, Australian wood lace body (orange with lighter lines running through it), unique shape.

Every pawn shop within a 200 mile radius has a faxed or email copy of the complete list of stolen items.

I've got friends who are helping me scope out ebay and craigslist everyday.

I'm getting ready to see how good my homeowners policy is.

Nothing seems to be shaking the utter feeling of being violated.

The real kick in the pants?

I was just in India for two weeks and got some glorious pictures with my R1.

And yes, all 500 shots I took while there were still in the camera.
