Snow Bunting - Plectrophenax Nivalis

Snow buntings are large buntings, with striking 'snowy' plumages. Males in summer have all white heads and underparts contrasting with a black mantle and wing tips. Females are a more mottled above. In autumn and winter birds develop a sandy/buff wash to their plumage and males have more mottled upperparts.

Globally, they breed around the arctic from Scandinavia to Alaska, Canada and Greenland and migrate south in winter. They are a scarce breeding species in the UK, in Scotland, making them an Amber List species. They are more widespread in winter in the north and east when residents are joined by continental birds.

They are listed under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife & Countryside Act.

The snow bunting lives in very high latitudes in the Arctic tundra. There is no apparent limit to its northern range, while the southern range is limited by the duration of daylight, which influences their reproductive activity. This species is found in the high Arctic tundra of North America, Ellesmere Island, Iceland, higher mountains of Scotland, Norway, Russia, North Greenland, Siberia, Novaya Zemlya, and Franz Josef Land. During the winter, this bird migrates to the circumglobal northern temperate zone including the south of Canada, north of the United States, north of Germany, Poland, Ukraine, and east to central Asia. During the last ice age, the snow bunting was widespread throughout continental Europe.

During the breeding period the snow bunting looks for rocky habitats in the Arctic Since the vegetation in the tundra is low growing, this bird and its nestlings are exposed to predators, and in order to ensure the survival of its offspring, the snow bunting nests in cavities in order to protect the nestlings from any threat. During this period, buntings also look for a habitat rich in vegetation such as wet sedge meadows and areas rich in dryas and lichens. In the winter, they look for open habitats such as farms and fields where they feed on seeds in the ground.

Gully Washer rain so hard the gutters could not keep up with the flow, lot of Summer showers lately, shot in North Carolina.

If you haven't noticed, this one was captured using a Nikon......What a Nikon? Yeah, yeah, i'm officially on the fence with camera manufactures and will probably be there for a while. After shooting several nights with both have found when to shoot with which camera and why. I'll still be limited on the Nikon side until I can acquire a few more lenses but that too shall pass, hehe.

Took this photo, during our last workshops in July where we offered our participants an option of including a character in the scene. This one was so much fun creating and we all enjoyed a night dreaming up whimsical scenes with a variety of characters throughout the duration of the workshop.

Our model in this scene is Kialo Winters of Navajo Tours USA, His patience and expertise was instrumental in creating this scene and a big shout-out to Wayne Pinkston for providing the workshops and costumes. Thanks guys, you truly rock!!!

This male American goldfinch is giving us one last good look at his bright yellow breeding plumage. In fact, you can see where a few yellow feathers have already fallen out, to be replaced very soon by dull olive-colored feathers for the winter's duration.

"Socată" or "Suc de Soc" is a traditional Romanian soft drink made from the flowers of the European elder (or elderberry) shrub, Sambucus nigra (Soc in Romanian). It may be non-alcoholic or, usually, low-alcoholic, and can be carbonated or non-carbonated, depending on the fermentation type and duration. This is a sight I had never seen before last year, Gannets flying in tight formation the crucial thing is the date March 1st . Its not a great shot but I wanted to keep a record

We had gone to Bempton just to walk the cliff tops not really expecting much bird activity . However a RSPB warden told us that the Gannets were just beginning to the return to the cliffs and they arrive back in large groups . When they have mated they tend to hunt individually

Northern Gannets mate for life. Young birds reach maturity between the ages of four and five. They begin breeding between March and April. Northern Gannets mainly breed in colonies and breeding sites, also called “gannetries”, on cliffs and offshore islands. They tend to stay loyal to their breeding sites and return to the colony they were born in. Experienced adults usually arrive at the breeding grounds earlier than juveniles, to re-bond with their mate and to defend their territory against rival seabirds.

Their migration routes differ depending on their age. The timing and duration of their migration could also substantially change the geographical location of “gannetries” can also influence the migration patterns of this seabird.
