In autumn and winter birds develop a sandy/buff wash to their plumage and males have more mottled upperparts.
Globally, they breed around the arctic from Scandinavia to Alaska, Canada and Greenland and migrate south in winter. They are a scarce breeding species in the UK, in Scotland, making them an Amber List species. They are more widespread in winter in the north and east when residents are joined by continental birds.
They are listed under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife & Countryside Act.
The snow bunting lives in very high latitudes in the Arctic tundra. There is no apparent limit to its northern range, while the southern range is limited by the duration of daylight, which influences their reproductive activity. This species is found in the high Arctic tundra of North America, Ellesmere Island, Iceland, higher mountains of Scotland, Norway, Russia, North Greenland, Siberia, Novaya Zemlya, and Franz Josef Land. During the winter, this bird migrates to the circumglobal northern temperate zone including the south of Canada, north of the United States, north of Germany, Poland, Ukraine, and east to central Asia. "Socată" or "Suc de Soc" is a traditional Romanian soft drink made from the flowers of the European elder (or elderberry) shrub, Sambucus nigra (Soc in Romanian). It may be non-alcoholic or, usually, low-alcoholic, and can be carbonated or non-carbonated, depending on the fermentation type and duration. Tullamore D.E.W. is a brand of Irish whiskey produced by William Grant & Sons. It is the second largest selling brand of Irish whiskey globally, with sales of over 950,000 cases per annum as of 2015.
The whiskey was originally produced in the Tullamore, County Offaly, Ireland, at the old Tullamore Distillery which was established in 1829. Its name is derived from the initials of Daniel E. Williams (D.E.W.), a general manager and later owner of the original distillery. In 1954, the original distillery closed down, and with stocks of whiskey running low, the brand was sold to John Powers & Son, another Irish distiller in the 1960s, with production transferred to the Midleton Distillery, County Cork in the 1970s following a merger of three major Irish distillers.
In 2010, the brand was purchased by William Grant & Sons, who constructed a new distillery on the outskirts of Tullamore. The new distillery opened in 2014, bringing production of the whiskey back to the town after a break of sixty years.
In 2012, a visitor centre was opened in a refurbished bonded warehouse previously belonging to the original distillery. The centre offers guided tours and tutored tastings ranging from 50 minutes to 5 hours in duration.

Autumn, also known as Fall in American English and Canadian English, is one of the four temperate seasons. Outside the tropics, autumn marks the transition from summer to winter, in September (Northern Hemisphere) or March (Southern Hemisphere). Autumn is the season when the duration of daylight becomes noticeably shorter and the temperature cools considerably. Day length decreases and night length increases as the season progresses until the Winter Solstice in December (Northern Hemisphere) and June (Southern Hemisphere). One of its main features in temperate climates is the striking change in colour for the leaves of deciduous trees as they prepare to shed.

25th September 2014 - Hawker Hurricane Mk IIB BE505 of the Hangar 11 Collection performs a flighpast in the capable hands of Tony Ditheridge at the annual Southport Airshow.
This is the only flying example of the 'Hurri-bomber' and is one of only 12 Hurricanes in flyable condition throughout the world.
The history of this aircraft is one which begins at the Canadian Car & Foundry Company factory in 1942 as construction number: CCF/R20023. CCF produced some 1,451 Hurricanes under license in the early years of World War II. On completion this Hurricane joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as a home based fighter for the duration of the war. At the end of her military service she was refurbished to 'as new' condition and then sold off to the private sector, as were most surviving RCAF Hurricanes at that time. Many became much needed 'hardware stores' donating their parts to keep the tractors and machinery running on the many enormous farms of the Canadian prairie. Our aircraft was lucky and remained substantially whole, re-discovered by Tony Ditheridge in Canada in the 1990's with most major components intact. Returning to the UK, restoration work began in earnest in 2005 at Hawker Restorations facility in Suffolk. The comprehensive restoration was completed in January 2009 and saw this rare Hurricane rolled out in her fighter-bomber configuration resplendent in the markings of BE505, a Manston based Mk IIB operated by 174 (Mauritius) Squadron in spring, 1942. Her first post-restoration flight took place from North Weald on January 27, 2009.
The bridge was built between the years of 1895 and 1897 by the Swiss Northeastern Railway at a cost of 980,000 Swiss francs.
The bridge has a total length of 439 metres (1,440 ft) and has a height of 50 metres (160 ft) above river level. The principal span comprises a 90 metres (300 ft) long and 9 metres (30 ft) high iron truss bridge.[1] Several natural stone masonry approaches with piers up to 50m in height lead to the bridge from the north and south of the steel truss. The original carriageway, consisting of a ballasted track on Zores iron profiles, was replaced by a steel trough with ballast in 1982/1983. Several joints of the truss girder were also strengthened using post-tensioned bolts, and the steel elements were entirely repainted for corrosion protection.

The reduced frequency and duration of floods in the River Murray has degraded the water-dependent vegetation communities across the Hattah Lakes, which has in turn reduced the diversity and abundance of animals that rely on healthy vegetation for habitat. A program of environmental watering is in place to ensure the integrity of the ecosystem is sustained. One of the aims of this is to improve the health of the majestic River Red Gums that require frequent flooding to survive.
The flooding of the Lake meant we couldn't access alot of the park but allowed us to view the Gums in their prime and enjoy the abundance of birds and animals including a giant Murray Cod that leapt out of the water!

This popular Australian Grevillea cultivar was developed for its colour, attractiveness to native honeyeaters, and duration in flower. Most Grevillea varieties cultivated in the last fifteen years or so carry these traits so the several examples I have in my Gold Coast hinterland garden are still putting on a show. It's raining today so I brought the show indoors. This bloom was captured using natural light (despite the gloom) and a slightly longer exposure.
