Built for durability versus beauty, the old fog alert station beneath the Golden Gate Bridge has stood stoically guarding the entrance to the San Francisco Bay since the 19th century. Still, there is a certain Sheng Fui about it me thinks--as the old stone building has gradually become one with its surrounding environment.

Taken for the "Cotton" theme for Macro Mondays. This was a Christmas gift for Cosmo. He's pretty much destroyed this "durable" toy.
Bristlecone pines (Pinus aristata), the most durable living entities on this planet, are known to have achieved lifespans of several thousand years. A native of the American Rocky Mountains, these conifers are found at elevations which exceed 8,000 feet and are often found right at the timberline,11,500 feet. Colorado contains the most easterly found environments for bristlecone pines in the United States.
This is taken on Mount Evans Scenic and Historic Byway, the highest paved road in North America, a grove of remarkable trees whose gnarled trunks and knotty branches have stood here since the Roman Empire ended some 1,500 years ago. These trees are known for their ability to survive in very harsh conditions for a very long time; the oldest known specimen, which is located near Craig, is believed to be at least 2,461 years old.

"Madame Meilland" est un trésor végétal sauvé de la seconde guerre mondiale. Voici son histoire:
Afin de protéger sa création de l'invasion de la France par l' Allemagne en juin 40, Francis Meilland fit parvenir ses boutures à des amis basés en Turquie, en Italie et en Allemagne.
La plante fut aussi envoyée aux Etats-Unis sous forme de quelques greffons, via le consul américain qui utilisa le dernier avion à quitter la région lyonnaise en 1942. La variété fut ainsi préservée par Robert Pyle, un rosiériste de Pensylvanie, ami américain de la famille Meilland depuis 1933.
A l'automne 1942, F. Meilland publia cette nouvelle rose dans le catalogue de l'entreprise, lui attribuant le nom de sa mère décédée 10 ans plus tôt: "Madame Antoine Meilland".
Après la signature de l'armistice le 8 mai 1945, F. Meilland reçut une nouvelle inattendue de la part de Robert Pyle: Il avait officiellement lancé la commercialisation du rosier N° 3-35-40 sous le nom de "PEACE". Le baptême avait été organisé par l'American Rose Society à Pasadena en Californie en présence des vedettes de cette époque.
C'était le jour de la chute de Berlin, date considérée comme marquant la fin de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale en Europe !!!
La nouvelle "Rose Peace" fut offerte aux 49 personnes des différents pays, qui, le 26 juin 1945 se réunirent à San Francisco pour constituer l'ONU.
Une "ROSE DE LA PAIX" était posée sur le bureau de chacun des délégués, accompagnée de cette note: "NOUS ESPERONS QUE LA ROSE "PEACE" PORTERA LES PENSEES HUMAINES VERS UNE PAIX DURABLE DANS LE MONDE"...

Here is the History of the rose "Madame Meilland" or "PEACE ROSE":
The history of "Peace Rose" and how it came about is a fascinating story wich is well worth telling.
In 1935, the French rose breeder Françis Meilland chose fifty seedlings from his seed beds. One of which was labelled 3-35-40. Over the next few years, F. Meilland watched its development with interest and planned to launch the new rose as "Madame Antoine Meilland" in honour of his mother.
However, a few months later, Hitler invaded France and the future of the rose nursery looked dire. To ensure that the new rose was not lost forever, F. Meilland managed to get 3 parcels of budwood out of the country, one of which was smuggled out in a diplomatic bag on the last plane out of France. The budwood was sent to another rose breeder, Robert Pyle, in Pensylvania, USA.
Over the next few years, F. Meilland launched his new rose in France as "Madame Antoine Meilland". He was not aware that some of the budwood had reached Germany, and Italy and the rose was being sold under different names. In Germany, it was called "Gloria Dei", and in Italy "Gioia".
F. Meilland had not had any word from America and had no idea the fate of his rose over there.
It was not untill liberation of France in 1945, that F. Meilland finally heard from Robert Pyle that the rose had survived the war and was being grown successfully.
In the meantime, F. Meilland had decided to change the name of the rose. He wrote to Field Marshall Alan Brooke to thank him for his part in the liberation of France, and to ask him if he would give his name to the rose. The Field Marshall declined stating that a far more fitting name would be "PEACE".
The new name "Peace" was publicly announced in America by Robert Pyle on the 29th April 1945, the very day that Berlin fell and was officialy considered the end of Second World War in Europe.
Towards the end of 1945, "Peace Roses" were given to each of the delegations at the inaugural meeting of the UNITED NATIONS in San Francisco each with a note which read
"We HOPE THE "PEACE ROSE" WILL INFLUENCE MEN'S THOUGHTS FOR EVERLASTING WORLD PEACE"...
I will always have a rosebush "Peace Rose" in my garden...

Skunk cabbage plants are in full bloom now. These strange wildflowers are restricted to growing in wet woodlands where the ground is swampy or has hillside seeps. These durable perennial plants can survive for decades if left alone.
For a magazine I made this photo. It stands for durability and being economical. It was great fun to make this. I had to "snitch" some coins out of the piggy bank of my daughter though hahaha! Hope you like it.
I have a special fondness for bamboo, not because they grow everywhere here in Indonesia but because of the philosophy behind it. Bamboo could easily bend in strong winds, but they rarely break. It is its durability and vitality that amazes me the most. HGGT!
Huon pine is an extremely durable wood. That is why it was prized in the 19th century for ship building. It was (and still is) very plentiful on the south west coast of Tasmania. In fact a number of early 19th century sailing ships were constructed in Macquarie Harbour on the west coast. Today, it is better known as a preferred timber for expensive furniture.
This red marker buoy was made in the mid 19th century and spent many years in service in the Tamar Channel. Considering its exposure to all weather conditions, it remains in good knick.

I found two old roll films in a shoe box with photos. The box moved more than five times with me and was last in the basement. Now I have developed one of the films, an Ilford HP5.
This is a very old motorcycle, Manual shifting is very special. Two-stroke motorcycle engine to the famously durable, Air pollution is the biggest drawback. I guess motorcycles will continue to serve, Until parts disappear.

Three black rings divides the plug in four sections : ground, microphone, left and right ( = stereo) and two black rings makes three sections: ground, left and right.
( I learn a lot from my two sons! One of them actually suggested I photograph his headphone plugs for MM)

The Upgraded B6 Switcher: A Durable “Yard Goat”
Built: 1916 by Pennsylvania Railroad, Juniata Shops, Altoona, Pennsylvania
Retired: 1957
The addition of the Pennsylvania Railroad’s signature Belpaire firebox, superheaters and power reverse lever made this B6sb switcher one of the most modern, powerful, and efficient 0-6-0’s anywhere. The B6 class as a whole was the most successful of what the Pennsylvania Railroad called their “shifters.” Like most switching engines, No. 1670 led a career of little excitement, but great importance.
Scuttling back and forth, this little “yard goat” spent most of its life breaking down and making up new trains. Its sloped-back tender gave good visibility to the rear – an important feature on a locomotive that would spend half of its life in reverse.
The No. 1670 is one of two surviving Pennsylvania Railroad B6 locomotives and the only B6sb.

Whilst no archaeological material was found in the durable, mineral and easy-to-clean interior, objects from the Chalcolithique (4,720-4,220 ybp) have been found around the site. The lower menhir may be from anywhere between 6,000 and 4,500 ybp and that whole transitional period from the end of the Neolithic into the first ages of metal looks to be valid for this site.
The cavity is 3.20 x 2.30 x 1.90 m The entrance hole is 70 cm in diameter. The outside rim is around 10 cm wide. The rock is granit and the cavity a clean cul-de-sac, so from my understanding must be considered as man made. There seem to be basins above the site and a 2.18 m high menhir stands 30m below on the same 'path'.
Unlike some of the troglodyte sepultures from a broadly similar period in Sardinia, the interior space is curved like a large bowl and, apart from the concentric entrance rim, has no lines of form or structure.
With the menhir close-by, one must expect the area to have been frequented and the great effort to make this cavity cannot have been for the creation of a secret place to hide people or objects - the outcrop is far too dominant.
Describing the acoustic qualities needs to tip from correlation to causation in that the acoustics were the aim of the site and not a by product. Why here? What is it about this section of landscape? ...

Harris Tweed is a traditional woollen cloth from the Scottish Western Isles, namely from the Island of Harris & Lewis - yes, one island, two parts and two names! The cloth is highly valued for its warmth and durability. As you can see there are many many colours woven into the fabric, as well as a herring-bone pattern, giving it a very attractive appearance. The red slash is from the lining of the collar.

My durable, trusty old Pentax died today during this final drop shoot. It far exceeded the 100k shutter actuations guaranteed by the manufacturer. Thank you, my friend. Thankfully, the 50mm f/1.4 is fine and will go on another camera eventually.

1960 Mack B-61 Truck
This 1960 Mack is one of 137,000 B-model Mack trucks that were made between 1953 and 1966. Modern and aerodynamic in appearance, the B-series was developed in the late 1940s as the successor to the L-series, which was made from 1940 to 1956. The B-series was then replaced by the R-series, which was made for 40 years until it was discontinued in 2002 and replaced by the D-series. Some B-series Macks had five-speed transmissions, which was only possible because Mack engines have a wide RPM operating range.
Mack would always build whatever you wanted; they were and still are a custom manufacturer. The engine, transmission, and rear axle were all made by Mack. They were one of a few manufacturers to make all of their own parts. If, however, you wanted another brand of engine or transmission, they would put it in for you. The B-series was made into a variety of configurations; in addition to heavy trucks, there were fire trucks and school buses. These trucks were extremely durable and serviceable, and well regarded by truck buyers and operators.

Cette chenille a bien grandi et grossi, et changé de couleur, depuis le 5 avril, premier jour où je l’ai aperçue sur une tige de cardamine des prés (Cardamine pratensis). Au départ, elle mesurait à peine 1 cm et pouvait facilement se cacher derrière la tige. C’est qu’elle a besoin de prendre des forces ! Trois à cinq semaines après l’éclosion (donc bientôt), elle quittera la cardamine pour chercher un endroit où se métamorphoser. Elle ne va en général pas très loin si elle trouve un support suffisamment solide et durable, car la chrysalide va y rester accrochée de longs mois avant de devenir un papillon au printemps suivant.
This caterpillar has grown considerably and put on weight, and changed colour, since 5 April, the first day I spotted it on a stem of common cuckoo flower (Cardamine pratensis). At first, it was barely 1 cm long and could easily hide behind the stem. It needs to build up its strength! Three to five weeks after hatching (so very soon), it will leave the cuckoo flower to find a place to pupate. It doesn’t usually go very far if it finds a sufficiently sturdy and durable surface, as the chrysalis will remain attached there for many months before emerging as a butterfly the following spring.

The Hollywood Sign is an American landmark and cultural icon overlooking Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. Originally the Hollywoodland Sign, it is situated on Mount Lee, in the Beachwood Canyon area of the Santa Monica Mountains. Spelling out the word "HOLLYWOOD" in 15 m white uppercase letters and 138 m long, it was originally erected in 1923 and originally read "HOLLYWOODLAND", as a temporary advertisement for a local real estate development, but due to increasing recognition the sign was left up, and replaced in 1978 with a more durable all-steel structure. Now, in films and television shows, the Hollywood Sign is often used as an establishing shot for Los Angeles and Hollywood.

Hollywood Sign – punkt orientacyjny w postaci napisu „HOLLYWOOD”, usytuowanego na południowym zboczu góry Lee w łańcuchu niewysokich gór Santa Monica w Los Angeles, w Kalifornii. Litery są białe, mają wysokość 15 metrów, a długość całego napisu wynosi 138 metrów. Napis został zaprojektowany przez Thomasa Fiska Goffa i ustawiony w 1923 jako reklama budowanego niedaleko osiedla mieszkaniowego „HOLLYWOODLAND” (i taki też był pierwotnie napis). Z czasem napis przestał być tylko reklamą nieruchomości, a stał się synonimem amerykańskiego przemysłu filmowego bez względu na to, czy dany film powstał tutaj czy w innej części USA.

A brick with, for British viewers at least, a familiar name. There is a helpful article, published by the Northern Echo, giving a little history of the brick, made by Stanley Brothers and identifying other users of the "trademark" (a manufacturer of bitumen roofing felt and, from 1929, the London Rubber Company). Warning; the Northern Echo page is hopelessly infected with advertisements, all meaningless.

The Car
Walter P. Chrysler's first automobile bearing his own name was built at Detroit's former Chalmers plant and made its debut in January of 1924. It was a well-engineered and innovative vehicle that was medium priced and its six-cylinder engine offered above-average performance. The new Chrysler had a tubular front axle, full pressure lubrication, and hydraulic brakes. During its first year of production, more than 32,000 examples were sold. Chrysler quickly built a reputation for its excellent performance and durability, and this was proven during the late 1920s and early 1930s in top racing events, including the 24 Hours of LeMans, Spa 24 Hours, and the Mille Miglia.
The 1930s saw Chrysler introducing its Imperial Eight and continued updates to its core six-cylinder models. The CD Deluxe Eight line was introduced in May of 1931. Power was from an L-head 282.1 cubic-inch engine offering 100 horsepower and mated to a four-speed 'multi-range' transmission. Bodystyles included a convertible coupe, Royale, roadster, and sedan.

An attractive and durable plant, Tradescantia pallida ’Purpurea' (Purple Heart) is a popular trailing evergreen perennial noted for its remarkable foliage of narrow, pointed, purple leaves, 2-5 in. long (5-12 cm). Arranged alternately along thick, but fragile, purple stems, the leaves are deep royal purple above, and bright violet underneath. Blooming constantly during warm weather with small clusters of bright pink, 3-petalled, pale orchid-pink flowers. 1 in. (2.5 cm), emerge at the stem tips. Tradescantia pallida is a tender perennial which makes a beautiful groundcover. Its sprawling stems root in the moist soil, to create a carpet of ground-hugging foliage. Evergreen in frost-free areas, it dies back with mild freezes, but sprouts back in spring. In colder areas, it may be grown as a bedding annual, in a container or hanging basket, or as a houseplant.

Well the chain link fence is durable and the helicopter is made from a lot of hardware and a lot of hardware went into the construction of downtown San Diego, California.

Our skyline is not real high as compared to some other major cities because of the Lindbergh Field Airport. The approach for landing and takeoff for the airlines is pretty tight to the buildings of the metropolitan area. Anyone who has every flown in or out of San Diego knows what I am talking about. Oh... then there is the Rose Canyon Fault Line which runs right under the bay... tall buildings should not live right next to fault lines... well nothing's perfect and I sure do love my city!
