I had to go to a town called Hamirpur for a day on work on Thursday.I came back home yesterday.It was a hectic trip as Hamirpur is a five hours drive through pretty bad mountain roads from Shimla.However at this time of the year the countryside is beautiful because of the mustard fields and I got one or two nice shots on the way.I got this shot of three ladies near a small place called Brahmpukhar somewhere midway between Shimla and Hamirpur.
The ladies of Himachal are fond of bright colours and often while working in the fields they tie their dupatta (piece of long cloth which is usually draped over the upper portion of the body) around their heads.

when I stayed with Chandrashekar in the old town, quite close to the big temple in Tiruvannamalai, his daughter Ganga used to bring me chai in the morning. It was very very sweet, but strong at the same time and it gave me a great start for the day which would see another round around the beloved Arunachala hill.

On outdoor location to a village called Mukhmelpur, on the outskirts of Delhi for a rural shoot, I captured this pretty young girl (model) looking towards me, carrying green grass home to be used as fodder for cattle in India. This girl looked rustic except for her tattoo on the wrist. Wearing a typical Indian rural outfit with her head covered with a 'dupatta', she totally looked her part of a young village girl. The wheat fields were beautiful green with a month or two away from harvesting!

My mother's stole on the clothes' line. It is shot through one layer, and the overlaps and folds seen are part of the other layer behind the front layer. I waited for the wind so that i could get the dynamic effect of motion and the diagonal lines.

Today the roles were reversed...My brother (Bobby) told me he has decided he is only interested in people photography, so pretty much all day I was playing his model, while he was being the hotshot portrait photographer :) This one has been taken by him (Thanks Kiddo, love you loads :) and processed by me...for some reason I felt it had a certain inherent peace that I am feeling right now...

It was drizzling and the kid's mother had him wrapped in her dupatta, embracing him in the safest place on earth.
Too bad I was shooting only JPEG, that too at the 50mm crop mode of the leica. The next instant the mother turned and I lost this frame forever.

Love using vintage fabrics! Hope to use them more and more in my outfits -nicer for the nature.

This is Nisha, a twelve year old girl who got burned when her dupatta (an Indian scarf that is draped around the shoulders) caught fire as she was bending down to help cook. She has five sisters. In many places, such a family would be considered a blessing. Here in India, it can be a curse.
During clinic day, Nisha's mother pleaded with us to help Nisha, because she has five sisters. Nisha is the second oldest, and traditionally, the daughters are married off from oldest to youngest. Even though her burn is an accident, no one will want to marry her because of her disfigurement, inability to perform basic tasks due to her burns and the perception that her luck will befall children.
Since no one will marry her, her four younger sisters will have a much harder time finding a husband, and in rural Indian society, being an unmarried woman is a mark of shame and sadness.
Her mother sells pillows and sheets door-to-door, and heard about Interplast when she came to Seema and Puneet's house to ply her trade. Over time Seema heard about Nisha and told her mother to bring her in to see the Interplast team.
