When I was inside my safari accommodation in Sabi Sand this Vervet Monkey would often peer through the window to get a peek at me. I, in turn, would admire it...and of course take its picture.

This male lion is part of the infamous Mapogo coalition of male lions. This coalition has ruled the Sabi Sands Game Reserve for the past decade and are the most infamous coalition in South Africa if not the whole of Africa.
The coalition started off as 6 males but it is now down to only 3. Two were killed by other males and the other one just disappeared and is presumed dead. The Mapogo males are thought to be responsible for the death of between 30-60 lions over the years - this includes male lions, lionesses and any cubs not fathered by themselves. They have even be known to eat the lions that they have killed.
This particular lion is known as "Mr T" (because of his mohawk mane which is most unimpressive) or Satan due to the terrible things he has done to other lions. As you can see he has been in many a fight. It is thought that the days of this coalition are numbered as there are a few coalitions of younger and stronger males in the area that will one day challenge the Mapogo Males.
While on "bumble" Johan of Exeter River Lodge & David Patient of Empowerment Concepts. A "bumble" is a drive into the bush for cocktails, company, and the sunset. Oh yeah, we saw a male rhino pooping then spreading it around to mark his territory. YUM!

This little guy had been separated from his brother. I think his mother had left them in the riverbed when she was out hunting and he had been scared off and ran into the grass. I think this is the one that was killed.

As luck would have it they do have internet here! This was a sighting on our first game drive. It is a mother and baby white rhino.
We have seen brilliant animals so far and I will try and upload the daily photos whilst I am still here.

Very careful young leopard between Inyati and Dulini in the Sabi Sands. He got badly mauled by an older male some time back. He has now learnt caution - you can see it in the way he moves
Yesterday we had a great afternoon drive. We tracked this female leopard and found her in very thick bush - we had to do a bit of bundu bashing to follow her. The sun was setting and the light on her was pretty good. She passed so close to the vehicle that the ranger could have stroked her as she passed - it was pretty great.
We then headed off to a hyena den where we saw a mother and her 2 cubs. Hyenas are quite ugly when they are adults but they are very cute when they are young - I will post some photos once I am back home so if you are interested watch out for those.
After our sundowner drinks, we were heading back to camp using the spotlight to find animals and we came across to leopards - a male and a female. This is rare to see as leopards are solitary animals and they are only seen together when they are a mating pair. However, the male was not at al; interested in the female as she was not in estrous so he was growling at her and getting quite annoyed. Unfortunately, the photos were not great due to the spotlight conditions so I picked this photo as my photo of the day.

Sorry for the poor quality video. It was quite dark and the vehicle was moving. The interaction between the rhinos and lions was fascinating.
Not a sight I see every day, great to finally capture on film. The male zebra's flehmen response - it checks if the females are in season through pheremone detection via it's Jacobsons Organ.
To you and me it looks like one huge sniff while bearing its teeth!

I had a tough decision to make as to what photo was to be my photo of the day. The morning drive was great - we saw two 10 week old lion cubs with their mother. We saw this male leopard on the evening drive. I decided to use the male leopard as my photo of the day because I thought it was more likely that I would see the lion cubs again as they are quite close to our camp but I am not sure we will see this leopard again and in such close proximity.
I am putting the lion cubs up too though as they are too cute not to.
For those of you that asked, I am staying at AndBeyond Dulini camp in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve in Mpumalanga, South Africa.
