Pageantry at the 41 Gun Salute Tower of London

With traditional pageantry, COVID masked Beefeaters stand guard as the salute is fired although with 41 firings of the guns it took the best part of 45 minutes to mark the passing of Prince Philip.

[It was surprisingly difficult to get any front facing shots of the ceremony since ticket offices and gift shops shield the Tower's esplanade by the Thames, leaving only very narrow gaps even if you could get into position. The Fuji 100-400 with x1.4 converter was essential to have any chance of getting "close".]

Well done Steam Ranger and all the dedicated volunteers.

On the D if E expedition a couple of weeks ago we had to walk through a field with this guy in it. It took us longer than expected as he seemed to want to come with us and he had to get lured away from the gate for the whole group to get through!

One of quite a few pics from my recent Duke of Edinburgh expeditions that I will be uploading.

It's still New Years Day 2017, but the weather caved in late afternoon as 1936-built broad gauge (5'3") 4-6-2 no.621 races through the sand dunes between Port Elliot and Victor Harbor on the SteamRanger Heritage Railway.

With Encounter Bay in the background, SteamRanger Heritage Railway's 1938-built broad gauge (5'3") 4-6-2 no.621 'Duke of Edinburgh' is a few minutes out of Victor Harbor, South Australia, with the last train of the day to Goolwa on 1 January 2017.

If the sun was out it would have been right up the train's clacker, and lucky the exhaust hung up enough despite a strong onshore breeze.

With all the development between Port Elliot and Victor it's hard to find some of the shots we used to get so you have to try something a bit different.

Well it was my D of E Silver Practice expedition on the weekend and that gave me a chance to get a few pics up on the Black Mountains in the Brecon Beacons. All were taken on my phone but I think they are really good. I'm glad this iPhone 6S Plus has a decent camera. A bit of editing in Lightroom mobile and bobs your uncle.

It's exciting to see a crowd like this, but quite daunting too! Right in the middle of this shot, taken by my Dad, is the Duke of Edinburgh - Prince Philip. We have a Naval Base here and members of the Royal family often visited the city, but not usually with crowds this size!

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II arrives at Keynsham station on Monday 8th August 1977. His Royal Highness Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, follows a few steps behind. The Queen is about to board the royal train here following a visit to the town as part of her Silver Jubilee celebrations.

My condolences to the late Queen's family at this time of national mourning.

Remember when we walked for 7 hours when it was 35 degrees and our blisters were growing bigger. Remember when we finally saw the refuge in front of this lake at an altitude of 2400m. Remember when we took our shirts and shorts off and just dived in.

A new tribute painting celebrating the Centenary of British Airways painted by expressionist artist Stephen B. Whatley.

HM Queen Elizabeth II visited BA's headquarters close to Heathrow Airport on May 23, 2019 to commemorate the anniversary; having made many overseas flights during her reign aboard BOAC and BA aircraft.

Whatley has had a passion for watching planes since childhood, long before he ever flew. In the 1970s he enjoyed watching planes with his Aunt and Uncle who lived during that decade close to three airfields; first Biggin Hill in Kent, UK and then the USAF bases of Mildenhall and Lakenheath in Suffolk, UK.

The painter researched the history and sought passionately to capture the magnificence, power and speed of air travel.

In his distinctive vibrant colours and with dynamic brushstrokes, the artists captures the powerful essence of a contemporary twin engine jet, the Airbus A320 ; and retracing the history of BA, a BOAC Handley Page Hermes IV airliner from 1949 and a Vickers Vimy passenger craft from 1919 - the year when it was used to make the first direct flight across the North Atlantic.

The artist, whose work has been published in TIME, has a history of painting tributes in significant anniversary years.

Stephen B. Whatley has undertaken major commissions for the BBC, Buckingham Palace for the Royal Collection all painted on location ; and his series of 30 works commissioned in 2000 by the Tower of London are all permanently reproduced throughout Tower Hill Underpass, at Tower Hill Station, London.

In 2004 the artist was presented to HM Queen Elizabeth II and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh in recognition of his work.

The TD21 was introduced as 4 seat DHC and Saloon in 1958.as a replacement of the TC 108G. It was a revised version of the TC 108G, the body was made by Park Ward who were better able to supply them to the quantity, quality and price required. Powered by a 2993cc engine now producing 115 bhp transmission was by either the four speed manual gearbox (from the Austin Healey) with an overdrive optional from late 1960 or a Borg Warner three speed Automatic. Front discs from 1959 standard and wire wheels were optional. Wire spoked wheels became an option A Motor magazine test on a manual transmission car in 1960 achieved a top speed of 103 mph 0-60 in 13.5 seconds and a fuel consumption of 20.2 mpg, the test car costing £ 2827.

A quintessential English tourer the Graber-styled Alvis TD21 was an immediate success, the combination of a luxury interior, elegant bodywork and 100mph performance proving immensely attractive to the well-heeled clientele at which it was aimed. The Motor described it (just a little bit flowery) as having Jeeves like quality of responding perfectly to its master. And Autocar as - one of the most enchanting owner-driver cars imaginable. Owners included the Dukes of Edinburgh and Windsor, Sir Douglas Bader and James Mason. This 1959 Series 1 car is one of many Alvis cars owned by the late Peter Wheeler, former owner of TVR Sportscars. Recently restored and finished in Serione Silver

The series two was introduced in January 1962 door frames were now constructed of aluminium for lightness as well as being panelled in aluminium to alleviate persistent problems with the Park Ward body's wooden door pillar. Upgraded with Dunlop disc brakes on all four wheels replacing the disc, drum combination and from October 1962 a five speed ZF gearbox

The previously stand-alone fog lamps were built into the front of the car, recessed in the middle of new circular air intakes, one for the heater, the other for the carburettors. The rear number plate and the various lamps and reversing lights were re-arranged.

British artist Stephen B. Whatley - captured by a visitor who asked to take his photograph - at Tower Hill Underpass, outside Tower Hill Station, London - lined with reproductions of the series of 30 oil paintings the expressionist painter was commissioned to paint 20 years ago, capturing the spirit & history of the Tower of London.
