Golden Day Triumph over fleeting inspirations and ubiquitously seductive oh-wow-what's-over-there! Getting pretty close...

This was the last prep sketch of many for a woodcut. The middle section of the drawing with pencil hatchmarks peeking through the Sharpie hatchmarks was just a rough idea of what the woodcut would look like in that part but in reverse.

Then I decided that it was bothering me...so I would quickly just add some color.*

*I should know by now that you can take the color-lovin' painter away from her paints and into a black-and-white project, but you can't ever take the paints away from the artist. Or something like that.

And, of course, once I made that Cadmium Red Light connection, sparks flew. And the project changed directions. It very much felt like "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie..." but with paint. If you give an artist some Sharpie marks on a page, then she'll want to add some Cadmium Red Light just because it rocks and is amazing. If she adds some Cadmium Red Light to what was intended to be just a reference sketch, then surely she'll have to follow that up with some fantastic custom-mixed deliciously 50's aqua that's been on her mind for about 3 months. And if she adds that aqua to the mix, then OF COURSE she has to do some Xacto cut-outs on the border. Everyone knows that! ;)

And that's how this was born. I'm beginning Step 5 in this painting's progress and now it seems to have outgrown its 4" x 6" starter environment. The evolution continues! Stay tuned.

Editor's note: I'm still debating whether I should have one final step to add a cool color in the cut-outs, or if I should expand the whole dang thing into an 8" x 10" composition. Which would then strain the borders, once complete, and dream of a more spacious 11" x 14" environment. To expand into and out of...so hmmm. Still thinkin'.

Sunlit Autumn Woodland (Impression)

Quick experimental (digital) sketch (iPad, Brushes App) from memory and imagniation after a sunny autumn walk through the fields and woodlands where I live, inspired by David Hockney's work that I saw a few days before, during a visit to his "A Bigger Picture" exhibition in Cologne.

I'm trying to draw directly onto the block of linoleum. My apologies, 2nd 3rd and 4th grade artists in my art class! This experience has turned me into an erase-oholic, and I always try to get them to erase less and "just go with it." I'm coming back from Christmas Break with a student's point of view after this!

There's a new group that local that I'm so excited to be a part of, the North Texas Print Association www.facebook.com/groups/345347522214381/. They're having a juried print exhibit SOON! As in less than a week to get this cranked out. The theme is El Corazon, and I did a Day of the Dead drawing in 2012, so I'm loosely using that as a guide for this.

This is a very rough start, but sometimes I like to see where it came from as a work in progress. More to come!

©2012 Julia Forsyth, Eagle Owl Linoblock, Sharpie and transferred drawing on carved linoblock, 5" x 8"

This was the 2nd transfer attempt. These blocks really add up with wasted time, money, and creative energy (and regular energy, too!) when an attempt fails. Plus it puts me in a seriously foul mood. So I was very glad the 2nd attempt worked out!

Most of the transfer turned out great, but part of his eye and parts of his head didn't transfer at all. I just grabbed my Sharpie and re-drew on the block what didn't transfer. Then I picked up my carving tools and went to town.

I didn't plan it, but I think it's really interesting how abstracted Odiehas become from the beginning of that very first black and white "classic" Odie linocut print to this latest color-enhanced, map-printed linocut print in the series.

This is going to be in thegallery8680's 101x101 show that opens in a couple of weeks. I'll take another pic of how it looks framed when that's done too.

During printing today, I got the idea that this print would look really nice printed in red ink. So I printed 3 different prints with red ink, but I kept seeing a ghost-image of black ink showing through in a few places. It was a neat look, but I wanted pure red.

So I researched this, and I saw that Sharpie and/or leftover drawing transfer on the lino block can transfer onto the paper. I washed the block, then went through lots of cotton balls saturated with acetone as I removed all of the black from Sharpie re-drawings and the original drawing transfer.

Now that the chicken is plucked of his color, I'm gonna try printing again. Here's to a beautiful pure red!

Adding in some color through Sharpie pens now. I like where it's headed. I'm gonna let it sit for a while because I don't want to add too much, but I need to come up with a plan for where it goes next.

After looking at all those potential edits, I think I'm happy with it just how it is. So glad I slowed it down just a bit! I was 100% ready to cut.

I'll sleep on it to make sure I feel the same way tomorrow, but I bet I will. :) Very excited that what seems to be the best choice is also the easiest! That's rare.
