I took the chance at trimming the sides of her hair to make a wider and even swath of bangs (a little nerve-wrecking, as I've never cut any of my Momoko's hair hair before) but I'm really pleased with the results!

I had to do a bit of research to manage this shot. The basics I discovered for a low key shot are a black background, one light whose strength can be controlled and a reflector (optional). So, here's a pinecone sitting on a black liner from my diaper bag with a LBD (little black dress) draped over a basket behind it. My light source was a shaded computer table lamp which I controlled using another inverted funnel like lampshade. And the wall to the left of my "studio" served as a minor reflector.

I was unable to use my tripod for this shot (my daughter thinks it's a REALLY fun toy) so I balanced my settings around my shutter speed. (1/50) I ended up having to open the blinds on my windows to access a bit more light.

I darkened the black in my shot just a bit post-prossessing (-5 on that screen that pops up in Elements) and cropped it a touch. I tried to keep it as pure as possible.

Not sure whether I love or hate this shot. At first glance I like it, then on second and third I find myself hating myself once more. :( Stupid low self esteem.

These photos are from the day before the crazy hail storm hit Calgary. I was impressed by the dramatic sky that evening... And just as I wished for it the sun started to appear from the clouds and gave this very nice lit out foreground. I am very pleased with the dramatic sky and the nice green grass in the foreground.
