Told you some were better than others...

Read all about it, sexy space alien spotted over Rannoch Moor!

Told you some were better than others...

Read all about it...Forth railway bridge is conduit for alien landing party!

These have been ongoing for a while now, it appeals to my disturbed sense of national pride that it'd be surprising if the Little Green Men chose Scotland as the point at which to invade. At least it would make for some handsome backdrops for the re-enactments.

Clearly, some of these are going to be more successful than others...

The back is wizardry. And no, the sausages are not held in legitimately. #doublesidedtape

Ha! These are trapped until someone buys something from my Etsy-shop.

I send one of these happy girls with every order. :)

One more Betty...

mc1984 has pointed out that it looks like the crux of these collages is to Make Betty Look Ugly (or MBLU for short). This is not my intention. It's unfortunate that it's coming across that way and ever effort is being made to ensure that any work in progress doesn't MBLU.

What I was trying to do was to use familiar images of Betty (in the studio, at the beach or even those insane photos with the leopards) that we all know, to create something that has the Notion Of Betty (or NOB for short) without being strictly representational.

I suppose i could have attempted this with a collection of images of just about anybody/anything but I just like Betty...

More of Betty, I'll spare you the art-wank this time and just say that when i do these collages it's always with love...

Still going with the Betty. Trying to keep the cuts to a minimum and work more with the placement. Seems to be working okay. Out of the 10 I reckon there's only one or two proper disasters & you'll be relieved to hear there's probably only another 2 black and white collages worth of Betty left. Plus a couple of colour ones, that's all...promise.

The sweetest, most precious of them all - OK, you eh'd, uh'd, ah'd and finally, full of contrition, d'oh'd.

Then, 10 minutes later, while you're beating yourself up inside for being such a dumbass they come in and apologise: you were right the whole time. What do you do?

Of course.

Smile like the smug git you are and, when they're safely out of earshot mutter that final, sweet sweet word.

Ha!

Texture by ~Essence of a Dream~, plus one of my own and another by ground*floor, with thanks to Gary for helping me find ground*floor's photostream. I left some of the textures layered on top of the original photo on purpose, just to make it a little scratchy y'know?

See the rest of the set here.

Strobist info: SB600 right up against the camera to the left at 1/4 power bounced off the ceiling. Camera angled slightly downwards, me looking slightly upwards to catch some extra light in my eyes. A little extra dodging done on the eyes in Lightroom.

This is the last one I promise

It's been ages since we've had a bit of Betty Mae Page isn't it? And through the miracle of the internet there's this: www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=32128419 creepy website so you can see what her headstone looks like. Hmm...

If needed, when eh? and uh . . . don't work, AH inevitably follows. It's possibly the most important one of the lot, being as ambiguous as it is.

AH as in 'I don't have a chuffing scooby what you're talking about' or AH as in 'Of course! I understand completely and will deal accordingly'. It's all in the inflection.

Used correctly this little word will ensure that people leave feeling both happy that their problem is being dealt with, yet slightly bemused and with a nagging feeling that they'll be back in a week asking the same question. To which you respond: Eh?

So spins the infinite circle of the constantly bewildered.

Ah . . . I think I've taken this gag as far as it's little legs can carry it

This is one of the cards that I designed for the cardmaking workshop that I help to run. It's easy to make, but gives a good result. I've cut out a chick shape in yellow card and cut round the top part with shaped scissors to make it fluffy looking. A piece of ribbon is stuck across the middle with double sided tape and the feet are punched out hearts stuck on with 3D foam. The beak is a diamond shape bent in half and stuck on so that the beak will open. The eyes are two little punched stars, and this one is finished with a punched butterfly and two satin daisies in her 'hair'. Happy Easter is stamped with Hero Arts Dot-Letter Alphabet LL100.

For the workshop, I decided to cut out all the chicks ready. I left the ladies, and one man to chose if they cut the hair and which pattern. I cut it for one lady as it was a bit too fiddly for her. The feet and beaks and eyes were all ready, but there was a choice of colours and there were lots of ribbons to choose from. Everyone seemed to enjoy making their chicks and some making several.

This card features on my craft blog.

So, you've eh'd and uh'd and your ah has been uncovered as nothing more than a delaying tactic designed to fob people off while you scramble about trying to find out what the chuff they're talking about?

There's only one thing left to say really isn't there?

Notice that I've got the letters round the right way tonight. Let's just say this wasn't the first take . . . I had a couple of 'boh' shots before I worked it all out.

D'oh!

Jody was wrapping a present and discovered that Megan likes the sound of the Sellotape!

Struggling a bit now with Betty as I'm running out of source material. This one is mostly made up of the leftovers from the other collages. There's still a couple of colour ones but they're proving more difficult to marry together so this might be it for Betty. I'll do something with them tho, maybe a wee exhibition in a cafe in Fife (any thoughts on where might be interested?) or maybe make them into a zine.

I'll have to head down to those discount art shops and see what books of postcards are going cheap these days...

My first time "presenting" a demonstration at an international conference (I'm off to get more food and see the other demos). The poster and demo session was held during the conference banquet. People would come around, look at the posters, and if interested ask questions and see a demo running on a laptop.

Long overdue a new Betty aren't we? Quite like the lumpy-bumpy wood she's looking at and the skyline/cheesy sheet works okay i reckon.

Not many more black and white ones left but i've got a couple of tinted ones that i've been saving for a rainy day...mmm tints.

Drawn from memory of our holidays in beautiful Argyll and Bute.

Couple more Betty's...never used to like the seaside one's before. All that B/W photography wank with the different textures of the beach and the driftwood didn't really do it for me. But that same stuff makes it easier to mark out the contrasts in a collage...I'm sure Bunny Yeager will be relieved to hear that!

They just keep coming don't they? Maybe there's a wee book in these or at least a print or two. When all's said and done i might frame the better ones up (they're only postcard size after all) and try and find somewhere to show them.

I'm off out now to enjoy the sun...

Couple more Betty's...no the best this one but you start something with a plan and it doesn't always go the way you'd hoped. Just trying to use the patterns to create something compositional rather than descriptive. Like i say not quite what i was after...

I ran across this gecko, haplessly stuck to the back of a sign that had fallen off of the wall. It kind of made my stomach turn how sad and unfair it was. I freed the gecko, certainly harming it a little in the process; it dropped its tail midway through and looked very much worse for wear afterward. But my hope is that it will heal enough to live a little while longer.

More in the (apparently) never ending supply of Betty mash-ups. Quite pleased with her right (back) leg and the drapes, not so pleased with most of the other bits...but never fear, i'll live.

With Owen's "frog like" abilities, we've found that we need to keep him away from smooth vertical surfaces.

(No babies were harmed during the making of this photograph)

It's an out-of-season, sort-of-festive, kinda-creepy, five-armed-Betty! Which i think is maybe my favourite kind.

It's got so that every corner of the house has tiny cut-out bits of Miss Page strewn around...
