Well, maybe not.Located on 10th St and Waverly Place The Three Lives and Company bookshop may live to see a third life, but just not at this location. The building the quaint, little shop is found in is up for sale and the owners have opted not to renew Three Lives' lease. The company may have to look for a new home if they can't work out a deal with the building's new owner.Three Lives moved to the Waverly Place location in 1983,thirty-three years ago.Moving again could prove to be challenging this time around with way the real estate market has changed in the area in recent years.www.dnainfo.com/new-york/20160615/west-village/three-live...

The fantastic Davis Theater is going through renovations. I loved seeing movies in this old fashioned small theater and am happy they are renovating instead of closing it down. Here's a link showing some behind the ceiling-scenes of some beautiful architectural details ...

This is part of an evolving photo-project, which will probably continue throughout the summer of 2008, and perhaps beyond: a random collection of "interesting" people in a broad stretch of the Upper West Side of Manhattan -- between 72nd Street and 104th Street, especially along Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue.

I don't like to intrude on people's privacy, so I normally use a telephoto lens in order to photograph them while they're still 50-100 feet away from me; but that means I have to continue focusing my attention on the people and activities half a block away, rather than on what's right in front of me.

I've also learned that, in many cases, the opportunities for an interesting picture are very fleeting -- literally a matter of a couple of seconds, before the person(s) in question move on, turn away, or stop doing whatever was interesting. So I've learned to keep the camera switched on (which contradicts my traditional urge to conserve battery power), and not worry so much about zooming in for a perfectly-framed picture ... after all, once the digital image is uploaded to my computer, it's pretty trivial to crop out the parts unrelated to the main subject.

For the most part, I've deliberately avoided photographing bums, drunks, drunks, and crazy people. There are a few of them around, and they would certainly create some dramatic pictures; but they generally don't want to be photographed, and I don't want to feel like I'm taking advantage of them. I'm still looking for opportunities to take some "sympathetic" pictures of such people, which might inspire others to reach out and help them. We'll see how it goes ...

The only other thing I've noticed, thus far, is that while there are lots of interesting people to photograph, there are far, far, *far* more people who are *not* so interesting. They're probably fine people, and they might even be more interesting than the ones I've photographed ... but there was just nothing memorable about them.

Designed by Wolfgang Buttress, the semi-sphere accurately maps the stars seen from the Northern Hemisphere, with the lights even twinkling throughout the day. The lights are cast between a mirrored ceiling and a black granite pool below, suggesting a sense of infinity, Buttress said on his website.

Street art from the 2016 election by street artist Ron English, in which Trump is depicted as Humpty Dumpty, the egg character in the traditional nursery rhyme:

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,

Humpty Dumpty had a great fall

All the king's horses and all the king's men

Couldn't put Humpty together again.

Fall already, we are all so sick and tired of you.

The two white paint splashes are not part of the original wall mural, but they add a nice touch of "egg in his face."

Every year a group of children from HPAC perform a Shakespeare play, this year it's "A Midsummer Night's Dream." The two performances will be this Saturday and Sunday. I spend lots of time in Hunts Point documenting the struggles of the neighborhood, so seeing these children and the hope they represent is especially satisfying. It is a true thing of beauty.

Nia, here dressed as Titania, wants to grow up to be a fashion designer. I asked Nia what she learned from spending the year preparing and she said, "Everybody has a character inside of them, a character that can express many things." When I asked her about Hunts Point she said "Its good and bad. Lots of people litter, curse, and do drugs. That's bad. There are so many different cultures you can explore. I like that." When I asked how she wanted to be described, she said, "unique."

It's amazing that I never went to this historic theater in Lincoln Square--2 miles from my Irving Park home, in a favorite neighborhood--until its final day before closing for renovations. I saw the excellent documentary "SelectED" (about Chicago public schools), which was a special screening, so I never saw a cheap matinee here (currently $6). I took photos inside too. So what did you learn from preparing for the play all year?

Kenneth: "I learned how to memorize lines, how you can look at something so weird and with work understand it."

Janeen: "I learned how to be in character, to not be afraid to be myself."

What do you think about the Bronx?

Kenneth: "Lots of cool people in the Bronx. I am a straight A student, so I have to work a lot. I wish I could explore it more."

Janeen: "Its got everything you could want! I do like Florida though."

Whats your dream?

Kenneth: "I want to be a Police detective and an Olympic runner."

Janeen: "I want to be a Cop."

But the shipwreck closest home, and truly a Hyde Park event in its day, was the death of the Silver Spray only 200 yards off 49th Street. There, on Morgan Shoal, on the north edge of what was called Chicago Beach, she met her end on July 15, 1914. Her pathetic remains are still visible from the shore today.

The Silver Spray. actually the fifth boat of that name on the Great Lakes, was built in Ludington in 1894 and had at first been gaily christened Bloomer Girl. She was a pleasure craft, as the Tribune called her, the kind which people rode from the Chicago River to the Columbian Expo in 1893, or which later they boarded at Navy Pier for a Sunday ride upon the lake. Pictures of such craft suggest that she probably fit Mark Twain's adjectives for another boat, "long and sharp and trim and pretty."

A memorial to mark the 10th anniversary of the terror attacks. The historic Episcopal church stood strong while office towers crumbled around it on September 11, 2001. During the attacks, as the 1st Tower collapsed, people took refuge from the massive debris cloud inside the church..

Called Ribbons of Remembrance, the display echoes the makeshift memorial that formed on the St. Paul's fence in the weeks following 9/11, as mourners and visitors left behind hundreds of photos, stuffed animals, flags and hand-scrawled notes.

"Caesura," that replaces the bell tower during repair, plays an audio loop of bells ringing and clips of recorded speeches by Marcus Garvey. The sculpture is 14-feet-tall and more than 25-feet-long and made to resembles the watchtower laying on its side.
