Maps are boring things to post, but here's another map anyway showing the distribution of confirmed tornadoes across Chicago Land on Tuesday night. This map shows 20 tornadoes, though I've heard that the National Weather Service has confirmed 25 as of the time I'm posting this. This is very close to the record for simultaneous tornadoes produced in one storm in Illinois.
The blue lines are rated EF-0 tornadoes, with maximum winds of 85 miles an hour. The green are EF-1 tornadoes, which go up to 110 miles an hour, and that one yellow line just north of Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie is an EF-2. An EF-2 tornado can hit 135 miles an hour, but the Weather Service says this one topped out at 120. Which was still enough to collapse a bunch of electric towers and close I-55 for three days.
A couple of notes:
1. The National Weather Service has previously said separate tornadoes passed over both Midway and O'Hare airports, but those haven't been placed on the map yet.
2. One tornado ran right through the center of Chicago, ending roughly where Madison Street crosses the Kennedy Expressway. (Roughly where the construction crane stood in this picture from 12 years ago). This storm was a hard blow for all those people buying into the myth that tornadoes can't hit the city.
3. One person was killed in these tornadoes. They were in Cedar Lake, Indiana, in that long EF-1 on the right side of the page. As far as I've heard, that was the only injury.
