Red tailed hawks disperse by flying to into habitats with open areas with high trees which they use to perch on. Because they are found in a wide range of habitats and altitudes, they generally found in mountains, woodlands, deserts, agricultural fields, etc. These organisms are widely spread throughout the Americas.Red tailed hawks are sexually mature by age 2. They are monogamous meaning that they mate with the same individual for years.
The female lays about 1 to 3 eggs and both parents show parental care until the chicks are ready to leave the nest
The father is the one who brings the food for the brood.
believe that this is a single population that lives in Wild Cat Canyon because I always observe a few hawks surrounding the area. Since they are always flying when I see them, I can’t really distinguish females from males. I would guess that the nearest mating members would be in the same area of male hawks looking for prey as well.
The hawks are distributed randomly over entire range of my site because I would randomly see 2 to 3 hawks flying in different areas of the site. When I was near a disturbed area, parking lot, I would see generally see about 2 hawks per day, but at undisturbed areas at the park farther away from houses and the parking lot I would see at least one hawk flying around the area. I think these hawks are located where they are because these natural areas have more variation in terms of animals that they prey on and these places also provide more habitual places for them to perch on and for them to build their nests. I believe the population could be a source because the location of my site is of high habitat quality that allows these birds to increase their population. I think the offspring of the population I’m observing stay in the area of wild cat canyon but later disperse to other woodlands or open areas. Since red tailed hawks are short distanced migrants, I would guess that most travel from the north from Alaska or Canada. Immigrants could also be becoming from other local populations of these hawks living in residential areas.
In 5 cycles, we expect the population to be 489.4 and in 20 cycles we expect it to be 7169825692.3 . I don’t really think that the population is displaying an exponential growth because I believe that there are conditions that could prevent their population from reaching this type of growth. Because these organisms are at the top of the food chain, their population depends on the abundance of different prey they can eat and they could also be competing with each other or with other species for the same resources indirectly or directly.
