After a disappointing couple of days in Bryce Canyon, I moved on to my next location which was to be Kodachrome Basin National Park, which is located between Bryce Canyon and the Grand Staircase Escalante Region of Utah. I found a great site in the primitive campground at the back of the park, I think I like this campground better than the front campground because of the dirt road leading in to it. This prevents most RV's from attempting access and is a much more serene environment, although the front campground has free showers but they can be used by all visitors, so I seized the opportunity. :)

This is the Bryce View Campground and is named so because its view overlooks not just Kodachrome Basin but also Bryce Canyon, which can be seen here off in the distance with a spectacular sunset in progress. Wouldn't you know it, the day I leave Bryce the sky explodes over it. Bah!! I guess a fourth trip to Bryce is on the itinerary in the future. "If at first you don't succeed try try again" is what I was taught. :)

I found this tree just off of the dirt road that leads back to some of the more remote formations in the park. It sits perched atop a red stone formation and stands only waist high. I tried to get a POV and composition that portrayed this tree as much bigger and an alternate composition capitalizing on it's stunted nature. I ended up liking this one better.

I am considering this to be an FDR image "Full Dynamic Range." Not an HDR image. HDR is usually associated with software designed specifically for that purpose. The problem with these software solutions is that by the time you get something you like, they introduce strong haloing properties and unpleasant artifacts which give it a fake unnatural look. By blending exposures manually you control what aspects of each exposure will be included in your final result, leading ultimately to a "Full Dynamic Range" image. Maybe we can start differentiating the two different types of processes. Have you ever had someone ask "Is it HDR" I like being able to say "NO", then again, if they have to ask then I'm getting close to real looking FDR photos.

Thanks for taking the time to take a look at my photos, and as always, your views, comments, faves, and support are greatly appreciated!! Have a great day everybody!! :)

I can hear the rain again

Baby I'm looking down

Then back at you

Where you goin'?

Tell me, don't you want to see it through?

Oh it's tearing me apart

When your heart goes

Into silence

And I just want to hold you

When your spirit breaks in two

Hey baby

I wanna lift you up

Hey baby

I wanna lift you up

Love lives on forever

The thunder never lasts

So hold on, don't you worry

The sun is coming back

Hey baby

I wanna lift you up

In the distance

I can see it in your eyes

You're fading out

Head is underwater

Honey, don't you know?

You walk a solid ground

We can head into the dark

And I will follow

Right beside you

And when the night is falling

Won't let it get the best of you

If you decide to travel along this highway into the bowels of the Universe, carry enough fuel to cover the billions of light years ahead of you. You won't find a place to refuel. When you have travelled this distance without finding anything, not even a little bit of intelligent life and you reach the far reaches of the Universe... don't be scared... there's nothing there, either. Only the "nothing". Or since everything is cyclical, perhaps you have returned to the place where you started, full of wisdom from your long trip. It's probably better to look for intelligent life on Earth, but it's also very likely that you'll have a hard time finding it. Don't worry about not understanding the Universe or the reason for its existence... you're not Einstein, but one day you'll understand that... The Universe is wounded, but it still has infinity ahead of it. It still has you and me. Merry Christmas to all and to the infinite Universe that is within you.

Gregory Alan Isakov - The Universe

Ground Control to Major Tom. Ground Control to Major Tom. Take your protein pills and put your helmet on. Ground Control to Major Tom (ten, nine, eight, seven, six)... Commencing countdown, engines on (five, four, three)... Check ignition and may God's love be with you (two, one, liftoff...)

Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Parts VI–IX

"Shine On You Crazy Diamond", was written as a tribute to Syd Barrett, one of the founders of Pink Floyd. He was also known as "The Crazy Diamond Syd". Barrett was a very creative musician and is considered one of the rock icons, with a strong influence on many artists, very especially to David Bowie. Syd Barrett is a key piece to understand the evolution of rock in the 70s.. Excessive drug use, especially LSD, caused him serious mental health problems. Syd Barrett died in 2006 at the age of 60. Always shine diamond.

Blur - The Universal

The Universal is a science fiction song written as a tribute to two films by film director Stanley Kubrick. In the video, the Blur members wear outfits similar to Alex and his gang of thugs, the protagonists of the movie "A Clockwork Orange." The image used for the cover of the single alluded to what is possibly Kubrick's best film: "2001: To Space Odyssey."

Also Sprach Zarathustra by Richard Strauss (Op. 30) / The Dawn of Man scene, 2001: A Space Odyssey by Stanley Kubrick, 1969

We haven't changed that much in 300,000 years of evolution.

PS: Electronic - Can't Find My Way Home Just a recommendation. It is important to learn the road signs of the Universe... happy return.

PS: Ground Control to Major Tom. Your circuit's dead, there's something wrong. Can you hear me, Major Tom? Can you hear me, Major Tom? Can you hear me, Major Tom? Can you...

"Here am I floating 'round my tin can, far above the moon. Planet Earth is blue. And there's nothing I can do" (Major Tom)

PS: Merry Christmas to all Flick(e)r users... and to the Universe full of crazy diamonds that shine... And Major Tom

The lowlands here are arid, except for areas such as this that receive the wildlife-enriching bounty of water scraped by the nearby mountains from the clouds of winter storms. These wetland areas near the Great Salt Lake are an important haven for avian residents, both year-round, and migratory in the otherwise vast dryness of the southwestern US and the Great Basin region.

Taken on the same evening as the previous post but 25 minutes earlier, the northeastern sky was turnng more gray and denser by the minute.

Love that errie feel in the air! 💖

I have shown this photo in a colour version before.

Today I show it again as a symbol of social distancing, which has become so normal for all of us in these days

There is magic in the feel of a paddle and the movement of a canoe, a magic compounded of distance, adventure, solitude and peace.

A female Kestrel I think. We were about 2m apart, a distance we both seemed quite comfortable about.

The dramatic Grind o da Navir of Eshaness. Here the mightiest western storm seas imaginable have smashed a great hole in the sea cliff wall and thrown thousands of tons of ignimbrite rock through the gap. These boulders have built up into a giant storm beach, a distance from the sea, trapping a small loch between the two.

From A Distance by Bette Midler

A small break away from my recent work. Have a most wonderful day today!!

A pair of Mandarin Duck Drakes were easily photographed at Lynx Lake. Also spotted at a distance were two Mandarin Duck hens.

These Ducks are probably escapees from a private collection. They are native to the East Palearctic ("a zoogeographical region comprising Eurasia north of the Himalayas, together with North Africa and the temperate part of the Arabian peninsula").

God wipes away our money,

brought us to our knees and showed us health and life are paramount.

I might not like the rain very much but at this time of year in Scotland with the changeable weather we have I just love it when a ridge of high pressure air arrives and the water on the coast settles, then to also have a nice sunset glowing in the distance and ebbing gently as the sun goes below the horizon is just such a pleasure to be able to enjoy.

A view of the Manawatu countryside taken from the Apiti lookout. Some beautiful spring trees and light flowing across the hills.
