I am incorporating a traditional, structure-based pattern, but using it in a graphic manner, abstracting it from its original method of composition. Herringbone tweed is a traditional woven pattern. It is created by the structure of warp and weft yarns. I am using herringbone as a sort of template—it becomes the structure in which to superimpose other patterns.
The herringbone is first abstracted to a shape similar to a euglena, a single-celled organism. The patterns placed inside are structures within cancerous cells. In the background of the fabric are animals and anthropomorphic objects derived from Japanese animation. Here, the very British 19th century sporting tweed meets a contemporary Japanese-influenced indie pop twee--super-cute, to the point of almost sickening. Finally, in the foreground, there are splatters of pink paint. The splatters of paint reference Jackson Pollack and American modernism, but by printing them with a computer and through purposeful pixelation and digital noise they become wholly removed from their original energy and physicality, becoming a postmodern reference to urban decay.

This is an Angel...A digital print.I used the down feathers of one of my white peacocks to embellish her wings.

Exploration of the idea of self portrait through the lens of "present" awareness. For the lack of a better or less trite sounding explanation, it is based on the idea of not simply engaging in an act and becoming the act itself (sorry if this ruins it for you!).
When your photocopier fills an entire room you get to call it a “digital printer”. Any day you can ride a fat-bike to work is a good day!
