"Yi Shui Xi Cheng Series Two", 2009
Living in this economy-oriented city, we seem to have forgotten how to unfetter ourselves. Wine should help get rid of reality! However, can getting drunk really relieve our angst? There is another working day when you awaken. Have you ever tried to slow down your eyes and wrists to look at the labels on the wine bottles? There are mountains, rivers and animals. Drinkers all over the world fortuitously have their label design pointing to the atmosphere of nature. If link them up, it is discovery that there are usually different stories behind objects.
I collected 60 different wine bottles. By carving on the labels and leaving them naturally stuck on the bottles, I thereby took photos for them. Through doing collage in a computer, fictitious scenes of landscapes and cities were made. 12 photos describe the same city but different angles. Basing on the corresponding parts of every photo, you can have a more complete picture of how the city is.

This portrait is an exploration of the Milwaukee’s history, as well as my own experience with this place. It’s laden with symbolism and references to the things that made Milwaukee a city, like alcohol brewing, iron business and trading, some of the original plant life, and patterns that reference Milwaukee’s first socialist mayor, Emil Seidel. Juxtaposing that is my own experience here, watching. Alcoholism, cold weather, and the stale taste in my mouth.
