Additions to the Chelsea Australian Garden are underway. This digging machine is framed by the bush in the rest of the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Park with the orange flag fence and steep slope in the foreground keeping visitors away. HFF
Primary function is that of a continuous digging machine in large-scale open-pit mining operations, removing thousands of tons of overburden a day.
Took my breath away to be this close and see the enormous size.
The Port of Newcastle here in New South Wales is recognized as the world's largest coal export port.

I have a new phone, another Motorola, and I was trying out the new camera as well. It appears to deliver a much sharper, more detailed photo than my previous one. The only drawback is that this model doesn't come with an ultra-wide lens. I'll see what I can do about hanging on to that phone so I can still use the ultra-wide lens.
Quick snap of a digger working on one of the final parts of the once-massive brewery site at Fountainbridge - the brewery once covered several blocks on both side of the road, all long gone now and mostly redeveloped, this being one of the last blocks still being reworked.
The title is - as those of you with little ones may guess - a nod to the children's picture book Dig, Dig, Digging by Margaret Mayo and Alex Ayliffe, all about diggers and other big machines
Sadly, the near-complete model looks better as a soft-focus background piece than it does in any sort of detail. My initial enthusiasm is rapidly turning to disappointment. It's certainly not measuring up to the inspiration / prototype designed by Flickr member Evil Cheese Scientist.
For display, I'm seeing that it might be necessary to try to create some kind of diorama background. Otherwise... it looks like a couple of cardboard tubes glued together. At least in a diorama it will look like cardboard tubes surrounded by bits of plastic and styrofoam.

And now something different: it's the time of the machines.
But the story is still screenplaying. ;)

The roadheader was a 95-tonne Vöest-Alpine AM-100, a tracked vehicle with a cutting head attached to a long boom. In manual operation the vehicle is positioned in front of the face and the operator cuts the rock by eye, moving the cutting head with controls in the cabin. About 40 cubic metres of rock can be cut before the vehicle needs to be moved forward.
This is my first HDR attempt. I was lost at night between Uithoorn and Mijdrecht, walking on a road between pasture when I found this old Junkyard. I took 3 exposures and processed them using Photomatix Pro. Other Adjustments were made in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.
