I wanted this piece to address body dysmorphic disorder (having a view of one's body that is distorted in some way), the impossibility of ideal beauty, etc. The woman is intended to be anonymous because she represents women in general. She confronts the viewer by reaching out of her frame but is unable to engage in reality. Oil on paper, 21 by 29.

How do I visualize the ‘darker side’ of landscape? I am looking at landscape as a counterpoint to the classic notion of its photographic genre. It’s a landscape in which killing and suffering are metaphorically present. A landscape that signifies death, decay and is characterized by an unresolved, fragmented relationship to mankind. A landscape abundantly filled with memories.
Photography and death have a long and intense history. Not only through early battlefield photographs has the documentation of suffering and horror found its place in the medium of photography.
My photographs want to become signifiers for the atrocities and horrors that continuously happen around us. However far removed we are; we live in dark times. As an artist I am a collaborator in the dialectic of aesthetic order, beauty and death.

The Fifth Wall is inspired by multiple sources: the unique architecture of the Armory’s Raymond Avenue building; German modernist theater practitioner Bertolt Brecht’s notion of dialectical theater; and artwork that challenges the authority of a fixed point of view and suggests a deeper form of reciprocal engagement.

However, things did not stand still either in the party or in the society at large. By 1976, the dialectics of practice had clashed violently with the metaphysics in theory and, given the required conditions, the Party was poised for a major change.iv The post-emergency watershed in national life saw an explosion of democratic and opposition impulses in various forms and class dimensions. If the Janata Party became its big bourgeois tribune, the CPI(ML)(Liberation) emerged as the proletarian platform while the CPI(M) came up with its new project of formation of stable governments in states and conclaves with parties of bourgeois opposition at the centre. The inner-party campaign that enabled us to make this historic transition has been known as the rectification movement. .
This movement or campaign started with the limited purpose of correcting wrong ideas and practices concerning armed units, but quickly developed into a full-fledged onslaught on the metaphysical viewpoint of dogmatism and perfectionism. This led to great changes in the partys political and organisational lines. Mass organisations were built up on students, workers, peasants and other fronts, later brought together under the umbrella of Indian Peoples Front (launched in April 1982). .
Semi-Anarchism Crystallises into Anarcho-Militarism .
Meanwhile, the semi-anarchist groups were going through a long and complex process of coming together and falling apart to give rise to several short-lived and few relatively stable combinations. The CPI(ML) Peoples War (PWG for short) was founded in 1980. There was a long and tortuous course of three-way unity talks among MCCI, PWG and PU, frequently interrupted by internecine clashes including a "black chapter" (as the concerned organizations called it after the merger). In 1998 the PU merged with the PWG. Then in September 2004, the two "Maoist" formations merged to form the CPI(Maoist). The long process of centralization of semi-anarchist groups around two centres the MCCI and PWG was thus brought to culmination. The quantitative growth and enhanced strength led to a qualitative leap too: the unified body started its solitary journey tangentially away from the CPI(ML) trajectory as an anarcho-militarist current. .
In an unprincipled attempt to satisfy the cadre of the two organisations, both Charu Majumdar and Kanai Chatterjee were projected as co-founders of the new party! The two leaders who in their lifetimes consciously and resolutely avoided uniting in a single party were now posthumously compelled to do so by their followers! The post of general secretary went to PWG's comrade Ganapathy while the group agreed to drop the ML tag and with it the residual commitment to the CPI(ML) tradition, without, of course, saying it in so many words. The new organisation's ideological-political orientation came to be fully dominated by the MCC brand of Maoism. .
The primary immediate task announced by the new organisation in its first press communique was to transform the existing armed squads into a full-fledged People's liberation Army (PLA) and the existing guerrilla zones into base areas. But the first task that the world actually saw it taking up was a truce with the Congress government in Andhra Pradesh, a 'tactic' that backfired before long. After losing much of their old bases in AP at the hands of the YSR government, which ironically they had helped to come to power, they concentrated their activities in relatively newer areas like Dantewada in Chhattisgarh, Koraput-Rayagada region in Orissa and the Bankura-Purulia-Medinipur belt in West Bengal. .
Maoist Sect vis-à-vis Revolutionary Communist Party .
The most conspicuous common feature of these Maoist strongholds is that both in terms of terrain (mountainous and forest areas) and socio-economic conditions (the historic alienation of tribal communities from the economic, political and socio-cultural lifelines of India) these regions are very suitable for armed skirmishes with the state. This advantage has always prompted the MCC, PWG and later the CPI (Maoist) to flock into such areas, leaving behind the peasantry and other toilers in the vast plains. Moreover, in recent years these regeions have witnessed increased intrusion and oppression by the corporate-state nexus in search of minerals and other resources. The age-old tribal alienation is thus developing into an explosive situation pregnant with prospects of an adivasi rebellion of 21st-century (taking a dangerous turn in the words of the Prime Minister of India). The Maoists have successfully buildt on these objective factors, but in the process they have turned their backs entirely on their communist past and ended up as a rebellious sect based in just one section of the Indian people and working on a single-point .

The relationship between the historian and the past is mediated by facts. This process of mediation is marked by the historian's engage ment wiU1 the past which exits in various forms and manifestations. It is the historian's delicate relationship with the facts that shapes his/her understanding ofthe subject or the historical .
-process itself. While engaging with the past the historian has to often encounter a particular perception of the past which is mediated by faith. However, the task of the historian is not to reject faith but to try and explore the: historical processes that have led to the making of that faith. Hence the relationship between the histo-rian, facts and faith is not that of privileging one over another but to interrogate the historical processes that shaped faith and how that in tun1 has affected our understanding of historical facts. .
We have to understand that faith also has a historical context which is intertwined with historical facts. The .
historian's exploration of lhc past js not merely with lhe facts but also how faith has colored the past. The .
role ofthe historian should not sin1ply be to create a binary bet ween faith and facts but to see faith as .
constantly changing in tune with the historical processes of the time and then look at the facts and see how .
perception of the historical past change over time. .

1bis interplay bet ween facts, faiths and the historical past is best illustrated in the perception ofAyodhya as .
the birth place ofLord Ram. On the night of22-23 Dccen1ber 1949, idols ofRam were found beneath the .
central dome of the Babri l\1asjid. This act in one stroke sought to make the claim the area beneath the .
central dome is the exact birthplace ofLord Ram. The placing of the idols under the central dome ofBabri .
Masjid sought to replace faith with the fact that Lord Ram was born there. Hence it is necessary for the .
hlstorian while looking at the past to recognize how faith is converted to facts. In the case of Ayodhya this .
attempt to conflate faith and fact was done to forward a particular communal agenda. .

Through this act an attempt is made to obliterate the fact of the existence ofBabri Masjid for 450 years and .
replace it with a manufactured 'faith' of the location ofthe birthplace ofRam under the central don1e of the .
mosque. The task of the historian should be to keep aljve the Jnemory of U1e history based on facts and not .
on faith. The "struggle of mcn1ory against forgetting" should be kept alive by trying to retrieve what was .
forgotten. The necessity for keeping that alive is to understand our past and move forward with a secular .
and democratic vision ofour sodety. .

When the High Court gave its verdict it implicitly identifies what happened on the night of22-23 December .
1949 (the smuggling of Ram Lalla idols into the Babri Masjid) not as a crime but as an act of 'faith., The .
verdict chooses to base its verdict on the communally manufactured 'faith, of 'Ram Janroasthan' as being .
exactly under the domes of the Babri Masjid but chooses to forget about the demolition ofBabri Masjid. .
But no question was raised as to why the same faith, ifif existed in history, allowed the Babri Masjid to .
exist for so many years. Is thls not a question which should be explored by the historian to understand the .
dialectics between history, faith and facts? .

Also known as the Chiesa di Santa Maria in Vallicella, the Chiesa Nuova was founded by St Philip Neri on the site of an earlier church, donated to him by Pope Gregory XIII in 1575. The imposing facade, designed by Fausto Rughesi, was completed in 1606. According to the Cadogan Guide to Rome, the saint 'forbade his followers any sort of philosophical speculation or dialectic, instead making them sing and write poetry. Two of his favourite pastimes were insulting the pope and embarrassing initiates, making them walk through Rome with foxtails sewn to their coats to learn humility'. Quite a character!
Opening the conference I am at, speaking passionately off the cuff about the importance of education, making jokes, quoting Descartes, and he gets extra points for using the word "dialectic." About five minutes after this photo he said "someone move this computer monitor, I want to be able to see everyone."

Colour has been added to this otherwise largely monochrome image through three methods - yellow connector pen, 'Icemelt Blue' coloured pencil, and the colour photocopy fiery colours of the FireMoney crest on top of the Falling Column.
Like the white dot of Yang within the black of the Yin, these small amounts of colour create a whole new dynamic and feel to the piece - albeit by shifting into the three-, four- and five-way relationships over and above the basic two-way (dialectical) relationship of Yin and Yang (aka Black and White).
