I used to stay up late and sleep in. But knowing that I was missing out on the beautiful sunrises its hard to sleep in. Now I stay up late and get up early :) On this shot I had my tripod sitting in the water in the ice crack.

The Detroit River is the border between Canada and the United States. One side is the Canadian city of Windsor and on the other side is Detroit, also know as the ‘Motor City’ (Motown). Windsor and Detroit share a lot and one thing the people on the Windsor side enjoy is the view of Detroit’s skyline. Prominent on that skyline is the Renaissance Centre the world headquarters of General Motors.

I found these wonderful buildings looking at Google Street View. They are on Beaubien Street near the intersection with Harper Avenue. Just in time for Halloween! They are much more visible here than in previous years as a lot of trees have been removed. So hopefully someone is working on restoring them.

Campus Martius lights during the Christmas Season. Well worth a visit, bring the family as there is stuff to do for all ages! The beauty of Detroit's comeback is well worth the trip.

Random sidewalk view as we were walking to Campus Martius Park in downtown Detroit.

This beautiful three story Spanish Revival apartment building in Detroit was built in 1928 and until recently was still occupied. If you go on this Streetside link you can see that over the last ten years this neighborhood has gone downhill incredibly fast. In 2008 it was still being used:

Now almost nothing is left though the apartment building across the street still is occupied:

It is still listed online as "for rent,"

Greektown Casino-Hotel provides a great view of Detroit's annual fireworks display. Despite the threat of violent weather, everything went off without a hitch last night.

Detroit's Book Tower and an incoming, fierce storm. I managed to get a few quick shots off before the skies opened up and poured.

I did not end up with very many images I liked of the fireworks for various reasons. This one was my favorite after a little cleanup.

Every day there are more lights on in the city.

Another iPhone pic from the vaults. I basically climbed a grassy mound and got this nice pano shot of Detroit’s skyline.

A man who appears to be in deep thought

While a common depiction of Detroit's skyline, this is my first attempt. We were blessed with fantastic weather on our excursion onto the Detroit River last night.

In the foreground, is the raised track People Mover. Behind that is the TCF Center, formerly known as Cobo Hall. And of course in the far right of the frame is The Detroit Renaissance Center which houses GM's World Headquarters and a Marriott hotel.

Since moving back I have wanted to get a shot of the skyline from Windsor but with the border closed for non-essential traffic, it had to wait. As it turns out, this vantage point from the river is probably as good as what I'd get on the Canadian side. When the border opens, we will find out.

The clouds were good that night.

Downtown Detroit seen from Windsor, Ontario.Penobscot Building, completed in 1928, seen in the background.

The Penobscot was the eighth tallest building in the world upon completion (566 ft or 173 m), and was the tallest building in Michigan until 1977, the year of construction of the Renaissance Hotel tower.
