Asilah is an absolutely gorgeous town on the Atlantic Ocean in northwestern Morocco. It's about 20 miles southwest from Tangier & the Strait of Gibraltar.

It's a decent-sized town, but like most places where people go for tourism, you probably won't bother seeing much of anything outside the old fortress walls. (As in nearby Tangier, people tend to go there for the old medina and ignore the rest of town).

A quick overview of the history here...this specific area was settled by the Phoenicians around 1500 BC, less than 5 miles from the site of the current fort.

Throughout the centuries, it changed hands from the Phoenicians to various Moroccan empires. The Europeans (namely the Portuguese) decided they wanted it in the 15th century as they started sailing around Africa for India. The Moroccan empire took it back for a time, then the Spaniards had a go at it. Currently ,it's purely in the Kingdom of Morocco.

Unofficially, though, the fort has been overrun by French & Spanish expats with an artistic bent, as you can see from the pictures. So...it's a beautiful mix of African & European.

The fortress area is small. You can walk the entirety of it, lengthwise, in under 15 minutes. Only 5-10 minutes to cross it from the ocean to the third wall.

Since it's small, you don't need to spend days upon days here. Two days would probably suffice, though it's so charming, you could easily stay longer just to relax.

One thing I noticed...I didn't see a single restaurant inside the fortress walls. However, on the main street parallel to the long wall, there are street stalls and restaurants galore. Most, though, didn't impress me. Generic pizza, subpar burgers, not a lot of traditional Moroccan fare. It's really for the tourists.

Anyway, if you've read this far...thanks. I'd say Asilah is definitely worth the visit if you find yourself touring around northern Morocco.
