LOCKHEED HYCON CAMERA NOSE
The Lockheed P-38 was one of the most adaptable fighter designs of World War II. Early in development, Lockheed determined that they could easily replace the fighter's guns with cameras, turning the aircraft into a long-range, high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft. The letter "F" stood for Photo Reconnaissance in the designation system used by the U.S. Army Air Force at the time, so this variant of the Lightning was designated F-5. The success of the F-5 made it one of the primary spy planes of World War II.
After the war many F-5s were sold as surplus to companies that performed aerial surveys and mapping for both government and corporate clients throughout the world. Much of this activity took place in Central and South America where difficult terrain prevented efficient surveying from the ground. The nose on display was modified from the wartime F-5G configuration by Hycon Aerial Surveys, who produced many of the aerial cameras in use at the time. The nose was changed to allow a camera operator to work in the space formerly occupied by remotely operated cameras.
The F-5 nose on display was removed from an aircraft that participated in the Inter-American Geodesic Survey in the 1950s and 1960s. This was a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project that assisted governments in Latin America by charting missing information in maps of the region.

The modern glass fronted building is the Barrow Police Station HQ that opened in October 2015 while behind can be seen the Devonshire Dock Hall. This submarine construction hall, part of the BAE Systems Shipyard can be seen from miles around but it is due to be re-panelled sometime in the near future.
