Opening spread for a feature story about the latest high-tech devices. I don't get to illustrate much anymore, so when we ran into trouble getting the items needed to shoot or good enough provided images, I figured it was the universe telling me it was time.

this was made for the ECI grad portfolio review, but it also functions as a print test for my final portfolio to send off to the three grad schools. there are six more pieces to go into the final, as well as a writing sample booklet, letter of intent and process booklet.

Opening spread for a photo essay by photographer, Kent Weakly from his trip to Italy. I knew I wanted to open with this classic photo. It needed the space to display with impact. The trick was trying not to take away from the photo with the text that was needed to open the story. The solution was to make the text a part of the photo.

This Illustration was originally created about 8 years ago for a business technology magazine. The story got pulled so it was never published. Recently I took some spare time to finish/update it. What do you think?
Opening spread for a what's happening in town type story. I guess I'm just a simple man; you give me a story about hot tickets and I just want to see those tickets burn, baby burn!

Opening spread for a racial round table piece. Designer, Jessi Miller's idea to have the letters imitate the photograph really made it.
Opening spread for a feature story about the business side of the horse industry. This layout will always be a fond memory for me because after too much time on the internet and around town looking for just the right horse, we used this one out of my son's barnyard set.

Opening spread for a story behind a local high school pitcher being scouted by the major leagues. A hard personal history and his number are graphically tied together for emphasis.

Opening spread for a story with 11 date suggestions. Visually played with the story concept by having ALL 11 dates showing up at once. Special thanks go out to model/actress, Kimberly Leemans, who actually provided the 11 dates as only she could.

Opening spread for a story about the people who control water in the state of Florida. Their offices wouldn't agree to a photo shoot and would only provide us with standard Sears portrait style PR shots. We used them to create this Sopranos inspired group shot.

Opening spread for a story about this man's personal experiences at 3 mile island during the crisis.
This is a slight reworking of a story about the differences between mass and luxury marketing and how the rules are changing. Always loved it conceptually, but the type just wasn't right. Think it works now.
Just threw this up because I always liked how the h2overview line worked. I swear, a strong headline gives me the same rush as a strong visual.

Opener for a story about a growing prescription pill epidemic. I really enjoy the simplicity of a spread like this. Also, working on photo illustrations provides such a nice break from my normal responsibilities.
