Farm describe themselves as “a decidedly British design collective”, consisting of the furniture designers: Alexena Cayless, Giles Miller, Sebastian Hejna and Guy Brown.

Distinctive in personality and style, they each excel and specialise in different ways, whilst sharing a similar design language and drawing inspiration from popular British culture. They also strive to challenge the conventions of furniture design. Farm considers materials and production methods as the root of their practice with a commitment to investigating British manufacturing techniques.

As a collective they value and rely on the sharing of information, skills and knowledge to facilitate the design process and have based this as the starting point for their commission for Designers in Residence. Throughout the duration of the residency, Farm plan to set up a temporary studio taking inspiration from visitors to the museum, the design community and their individual networks. They will provide a platform in which to exchange ideas, and ask mixed groups of people to contribute by sharing knowledge, focused on the promotion of British manufacturers. Farm will apply this convergence of diverse expertise to inform four new pieces of work.

The four members of Farm met at Loughborough University on the BA Three-Dimensional Furniture course in 2006. They have continued to work as a collective, simultaneously pursuing independent projects and personal career paths. They now collaborate on different projects, helping with the advancement of ideas and exhibiting together in Milan Furniture Fair ‘Salone Satellite’ and London Design Festival.

"In 1962, the Commonwealth Institute moved to a distinctive copper-roofed building on Kensington High Street, immediately south of Holland Park. The building, designed by Robert Matthew Johnson-Marshall & Partners (RMJM), was opened on Tuesday, 6 November 1962, by Queen Elizabeth II. It was open to the public and contained a permanent exhibition about the nations of the Commonwealth, which was designed to inform the public 'how the rest of the Commonwealth lives'."

"In June 2011, Sir Terence Conran donated £17.5 million to enable the [Design] Museum to move in 2016 from the warehouse to a larger site which formerly housed the Commonwealth Institute in west London. This landmark from the 1960s, a Grade II* listed building that had stood vacant for over a decade, was developed by a design team led by John Pawson who made the building fit for a 21st-century museum, whilst at the same time retaining its spatial qualities."

Charlotte Perriand: The Modern Life

Text below by The Design Museum 2021, see: designmuseum.org/exhibitions/charlotte-perriand-the-moder...

“Enter the world of Charlotte Perriand, whose pioneering designs shaped the 20th century. Her modern ideas can be found in the way we live today, from the use of materials to her belief that good design is for everyone.

Step inside recreations of some of her most famous interiors, including the apartment designed for the Salon d’Automne in 1929, and enjoy some of her furniture up close, such as the iconic Chaise Longue Basculante and the Fauteuil Pivotant. Discover sketches, photographs, scrapbooks and prototypes that shed new light on her unique creative process and her rightful place in design history, alongside works by her friends and peers, including  Le Corbusier,  Fernand Léger  and etchings by Pablo Picasso.

Her life as a fiercely independent woman - a pioneer, a sportswoman and a global traveller – can be traced throughout her work and helped define the modern interior.

The exhibition was curated in collaboration with the Perriand family and archive and marks the 25th anniversary of the first Charlotte Perriand exhibition at the Design Museum in 1996.

Charlotte Perriand joined Le Corbusier studio in Paris in 1927 and co-created timeless pieces including the Grand Confort armchair.

She believed architecture should meet human needs, and as far back as the 1920s she designed open-plan interiors to make sure women didn’t feel trapped in their homes.

From the 1930s onward she increasingly looked at nature for inspiration and was highly influenced by the years she spent in Japan during the Second World War. A passionate skier, Perriand designed one of the most recognisable ski resorts in the world, Les Arcs.

'Dwellings should be designed not only to satisfy material specifications; they should also create conditions that foster harmonious balance and spiritual freedom in people’s lives.’: Charlotte Perriand”
