DEA+FUORI TRENTINO

Design Hub vision

RMIT’s Design Hub is being developed to support and expand the University’s position as an internationally renowned leader in design education and research. Construction of the 12,000m2 facility will also strengthen Victoria’s global reputation as a centre of design excellence and carve out a distinctive niche for Australian design in the global economy.

First-of-its-kind façade comprised of translucent, sandblasted glass cells with the capacity for solar technology to be incorporated into the cells

The Design Hub will be located at the strategic north-west corner of Victoria and Swanston Streets on the former Carlton United Brewery (CUB) site. The rest of the CUB site is to be developed by Grocon and will be transformed into a ‘mixed-use village’.

RMIT’s future epicentre of design will add further vibrancy to this part of Melbourne and architecturally, will be an engaging and innovative contrast to the classical, historic Shrine of Remembrance on St Kilda Road, which marks the other end of Melbourne’s civic axis. The Design Hub will have a highly visible presence from Swanston Street north of La Trobe Street.

The Network Campus explores the possibilities of architecture for the future of tertiary education which is speculated to be evolving into a 'web' model.

Current education typology cocoons individual disciplines in separated buildings - specialised but isolated. The network campus challenges this model by proposing instead an architecture that combines and connects multiple disciplines (in this instance, the Faculty of Arts & Design) within a single-building complex.

The Networked Campus is designed based on the metaphor of a web. Formal learning spaces of the various design schools are dispersed around the perimeter of the building based on the floor area needs for teaching, while enhancing circulation, exploration and discovery of students. These spaces are connected internally by a network of 'streets' and bridges that facilitate all forms of peer-to-peer learning pedagogy, binding the building together via a physical and visual connection that is both horizontal and vertical.

The huge internal environment is designed to be like an 'education mall' - transparent, well-lit, formal and informal learning activities featured both internally and externally... creating a rich environment that is highly condusive to learning, serendipitous, encouraging inter-disciplinary cross-pollination of ideas which promotes creativity and innovation, enhancing the learning experience of the next generation of students within the creative industry.
