The New York City School Construction Authority (NYCSCA) proudly launched its inaugural Design Excellence and Networking Forum on February 18, 2026, at the inspiring Frank Sinatra School of the Arts High School in Astoria, Queens.

This landmark event officially rolled out K-12 design excellence for the nation’s largest unified school system, underscoring a bold commitment to creating beautiful, high-performing schools rooted in evidence-based design.

Research consistently shows that thoughtful, human-centered architecture blending innovative architecture, landscape design, engineering, and specialist consulting directly boosts student well-being, engagement, and learning outcomes. The forum emphasized this essential synergy between pedagogy and the built environment, especially as emerging technologies, including AI, continue to transform how schools are designed, built, and sustained for equity and the future.

The program featured an exceptional lineup of speakers. It opened with welcoming remarks from NYCSCA President and CEO Nina Kubota, followed by insights from AIA National President Illya Azaroff, FAIA. Vice President of Architecture and Engineering Thierry Paret, FAIA, delivered a detailed presentation on the SCA’s clear definition of design excellence, incorporating evidence-based principles and the phased rollout of the new program. Pei Cobb Freed Design Partner Michael Bischoff, AIA, shared a compelling case study on rigorous, thoughtful design through the agency’s latest K-12 campus, a groundbreaking project that masterfully integrates intelligent building systems with human-centric placemaking on a challenging site.

The morning concluded with an inspiring talk from educator Jean-Claude Brizard, President and CEO of Digital Promise, titled “The Age of Human Intelligence,” exploring its profound implications for research-driven, technology-forward school design.

The one-day event wrapped up with practical sessions covering doing business with the SCA, capacity projects, and CIP projects, followed by an engaging networking opportunity that brought together incumbent and emerging firms spanning local, national, and international practices across architecture, landscape architecture, engineering, and specialist consulting.
