I spent 5 days in Denali National Park, hoping to see, admire and capture the highest mountain on the North American continent. I had driven a long ways to do so. Was a primary objective of my trip. Alas, this was the only view of this special mountain I saw in the Park. Including when taking the bus into the Eielson Visitor Center, which is as close as one can get on the buses. Even this little teaser, taken with my 70-200 was a thrill though.
Fortunately Denali did come out from it's cloud cover on my way south and I was able to get many shots of it. Was some dancing going on when I first saw it. Mission accomplished.

As an aforementioned peak geek it was a primary objective to see and admire the tallest peak on the continent. Took 6 days of anxious waiting and anticipation before the clouds finally cleared and I saw it in all it's glory. Yes, there was some ugly dancing...
Denali has two significant summits: the South Summit is the higher one at 20,310 feet (6,190 m), while the North Summit has an elevation of 19,470 ft (5,934 m). The North Summit slightly in view here.

This is about as far as one can drive into this special park, near the Savage River, where personal vehicles must turn around. During my 6 days in the Park I drove it multiple times daily, hoping to see distant Denali. Nope. The view otherwise was spectacular tho. And did see moose and caribou frequently.
Fortunately I did finally see Denali for several days when I headed south.
"This part of the park is technically open 24 hours a day, but the road is only open to vehicles from late April until the first snow in fall. Private vehicles can drive as far as Mile 15 of the Denali Park Road, to Savage River, but parking is extremely limited." nps.gov

Looking across the August fall foliage and a small pond at the tallest mountain on the North American continent.
Denali has two significant summits: the South Summit is the higher one at 20,310 feet (6,190 m), while the North Summit has an elevation of 19,470 ft (5,934 m). Denali is the third highest of the Seven Summits — the highest mountains on each of the seven continents — following Mount Everest in Nepal and Aconcagua in Argentina.

I spent 5 days in Denali Park hoping to see the highest peak on the continent, which was one of the primary reasons for my trip to Alaska. Alas this was the best I got. Fortunately when I headed south for the Kenai the Alaska Range and Denali came forth in all their glory (below).

We stayed at a lodge called Kantishna Roadhouse overnight which really increased our odds of seeing the peak of Denali.
To our amazement when we went to Wonder Lake we were treated to the sight of the entire range with calm waters.
Only about 5 to 10% of people who visit Denali actually see the entire range. The weather can change very quickly and cloud over in a few minutes.
We came back during the evening and found it completely covered. We were about to give up when someone saw a moose in the lake. We all ran over and starting shooting. By the time we left, the moose had gotten closer and the clouds broke up. Funny thing was it was about 11 PM at this time. It stays light most of the night this time of year.
I will post that shot soon. We were really fortunate with the clear skies we had.
Wonder Lake also called Deenaalee Bene' is a lake located in Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska.

This one's from the archives -- taken near Wonder Lake in Denali National Park in early September. I'm definitely feeling the need to go somewhere where I can shoot some wide open spaces.

Speaking of impressive peaks, here is the King of the Continent: Denali. Thought it looked good in monochrome. Heck even the mountains surrounding Denali are higher than most peaks elsewhere. Truly a majestic marvel.

A view near the end of the access road 14 miles into Denali National Park near the Savage River.
I spent hours looking at this beauty from my truck camper over several days as I waited for the light to change or for a critter to come in view. No luck with the critters but did enjoy the changing light. Denali is pretty special. Hope to return....

Denali is six million acres of wild land, bisected by one ribbon of road. Travelers along it see the relatively low-elevation taiga forest give way to high alpine tundra and snowy mountains, culminating in North America's tallest peak, 20,310' Denali. Wild animals large and small roam unfenced lands, living as they have for ages. Solitude, tranquility and wilderness await.

"Located adjacent to the southern border of Denali National Park, the 324,240-acre Denali State Park is the fourth largest state park in Alaska and almost half the size of Rhode Island. Denali State Park straddles the Parks Highway 147 miles north of Anchorage and is situated between the Talkeetna Mountains to the east and the Alaska Range to the west.
While this state park lacks the amount of infrastructure and attractions of its national-park cousin, it does feature several campgrounds, awesome hiking, plentiful wildlife viewing and some of the best views of Denali – even better than those found in most parts of the national park. Denali is cloaked in snow in the winter. Winds sublimate the snow and blow it off the mountain as clouds as can be seen in this image.
I shot this image off the Parks Highway just North of one of the viewing areas. It was closed due to deep snow. We did find a place to pull off within sight of the mountain so I could capture this.

From that great morning a year ago visiting my sister and brother-in-law in Alaska. It was cold that morning ... 6 degrees Fahrenheit. Ice was flowing down the river and the sky was clear giving a perfect view of Denali. Talkeetna, Alaska, USA, November 2021

In honor of those who sacrificed and gave All for our freedoms.
"The Alaska Veterans Memorial is an outdoor memorial grove in Denali State Park in Interior Alaska. The memorial honors Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Alaska National Guard, and Merchant Marine veterans from Alaska, as well as specific Alaskans who were awarded the Medal of Honor. There are also small memorials to the passengers and crew of military plane crashes in Alaska. The site was selected because of the scenic beauty of the area and its location between Alaska's two largest cities. On a clear day visitors can see Denali from just outside the memorial." Wikipedia

It was an amazing experience to take a bus ride around Denali and see the beautiful landscapes and wildlife. In this photo, a glacial river stretches through the valley in between mountains.
We were blessed by four days of sun and free views on Denali (previous Mt. McKinley), when we visited Denali National Park, Alaska. The camper bus driver, who brought us to the Wonder Lake Campground was also very exicited about the weather condition and vistas. So he stopped a couple of times in unusual vista points. Denali National Park is definetely one of the most amazing places I have ever been. I made a series of Denali pics which I will post in the next days. Hope you enjoy them. :)
Another take on this scene from a dozen years ago when I had these guys stop and hopped off the head end for some photos at a remote spot along the river. With a view like this the passengers on board didn't seem to mind!
Here's what I wrote back then:
DENALI - The Great One - That's the common interpretation of the native Athabaskan name for Mt. McKinley (since officially renamed), North America's highest mountain at 20,310 ft. in elevation. On a clear day the mountain can be seen from Anchorage 150 miles to the south and in Fairbanks 150 miles to the north and at many other points in between along the route of Alaska's own railroad. Nowhere is the view more spectacular than in the Talkeetna area where the summit is less than 40 miles distant as the raven flies.
Here the Alaska Railroad's southbound weekly passenger train, the Aurora (235S), has paused to give the lucky visitors a spectacular view across the frozen Big Susitna River near MP 224 on the ARR's mainline. Eight miles to the south of Denali (left in the photo) is the 14,573 ft Mount Hunter.

The peak of Denali is partially obscured by the plume of blowing snow at the top left of the image. We drove up the Parks Highway one day to see if we could capture an image of the mountain but not surprisingly, the first overlook was closed due to snow. Luck was with us as we found a place from which to capture the mountain before we lost light, as the sun set at 4:57 PM that day.
Oh, by the way, it might look like we're just across the valley floor from this mountain range or Denali, but that isn't so. I checked and at the location I shot from we were 80 miles from Denali, the mountain itself. In fact you can see Denali from Anchorage on a good weather day.
