Dear Sir, .

eeking Written Response on the Repeated Refusal of the Administration to Involve JNUSU in all the University Bodies .

It is with grave concern that the student community of JNU notes the refusal of the JNU Administration to involve JNUSU in meetings and deliberations of university bodies where JNU U has hitherto been represented. In doing so, the JNU Administration is violating a long-established tradition of student involvement in the functioning of the university. JNU U has historically played a constructive role in all these matters ofstudent welfare and concerns of the university. .

On 24 October 2008, following the Supreme Court stay on the JNUSU -::lections, the Election Committee resigned and reinstated the incumbent JNU U Council. A University General Body meeting was immediately convened on 25 October 2008: you must know the UGBM is the highest decision making body of the student community. Hundreds of students took part in the UGBM and as per· Ar-ticle 14 [ii] of the JNVSU Constitution, the UGBM resolved to extend the tenur·e of JNUSU by a period of three months so as to guard against any vacuum in the absence of the student union. In a letter dAted 12 N vember 2008. the JNU U had informed you of these developments and the extension of the tenure of the JNVSU council. .

However, the attitude of the JNU Administration has been marked by a total refusal to cooperate or heed the voice of the student community. This, despite the fact that the student union sought the cooperation of the JNU Administration in safeguarding the democratic JNU U election process, which has been recognized as a commendable· feature of the university. In perpetually seeking to delegitimize the J NUSU, through its actions the university administration is going against the will of those hund1·eds of students who pa1·ticipated in the UGBM of 25'h October and unanimously placed their faith in JNU U as the legitimate body representing the student community. It is .

umbent on the university to heed the needs and aspirations of the students. .

r by refusing to invite JNU:::>U to meetings of any of the bodies of the university, the administration is seeking to e rights of the students in a mo t undemocratic way. We dema nd that the university provide us a categorical in writing, stating how it will ensure that there is student rept·esentation in all the e fora of the university. administration is using the smokescreen of a legal opinion a an excuse for refusing to invite JNUSU to deliberative bodies of the university. JNUSU demands that the administration immediately convene a the e i sues wit.h JNUSU, a nd also provide JNUSU a copy of the legal opinion on which this .
