De Lauer's Super News Stand, 1310 Broadway, Oakland, California. They're open 24 hours a day, and they really have been there since 1907.
These signs in front of DeLauer's depress the hell out of me. Of course, they're a newsstand, so they read the paper and think that we are actually getting some walking officers. Not so.
Oregon Block: The original structure dates from 1889, the north half of the Oregon Block whose south half was demolished in 1903 for the Union Savings Bank Building at 1300-04 Broadway. A 1937 black glazed tile Art Deco façade designed by Edward T. Foulkes was covered or replaced with the present modern commercial front in 1965 after a fire. (The upper part of the 1937 remodeling was recently uncovered.... The google earth I accessed April 2014 still showed the horrid looking façade installed after a 1965 fire.

Wednesday night? Red wine for A., and a Ketel One martini (not bad, Jason, not bad at all), then Guinness for me. DJ Johnny Z of The Bad Future was spinning Mantronix, Tom Tom Club and Ladytron. Ch*d and Gwen were there. Later, sobering up in DeLauer's before the drive back to Whoa Creek. We missed last week's one-year anniversary gig, so coming out and having fun was the least we could do.
Sunday morning I did a plein air painting here, in front of De Lauer's . This is possibly the last remaining 24 hour news stand in america. It's in danger of closing because of declining business and the illness of its owner. xx more about the history

They won't be open 24 hours a day for long...soon they'll close from midnight to 5 a.m. Wanted to catch this while it's still there.
