What are some Dating red flags?
In the realm of dating, many people make the serious mistake of lacking the right exit strategy before
they agree to a date. You really do need an exit strategy of some sort when you agree to a date, because
you might not like the person after your first impression. Or maybe something comes up during the
date that triggers a red flag in your mind. Instead of just saying to yourself, “How did I get myself in
this mess?” it pays to have the right exit strategy so that you can make a graceful dash from a date that
somehow went wrong.
The most basic reason you want a graceful exit is because it’s unkind to make the other person believe
that the date is going well when it’s not. However, you don’t want to hurt his/her feelings outright. So
what to do? The first thing you should do is consider your words carefully – which some people are
unfortunately not good at. So you might have to say something like, “Listen, it’s been nice meeting you,
but maybe we’re not really the right match for each other, don’t you agree?” Or you could say, “I think
we can both agree that this is not really going as well as we expected.” Being gracious before you leave
gives the other person time to say something as well save face.
You should try to be kind as you make your exit – or as your date makes theirs. Don’t say something
misleading like, “Can I have your number? We should stay in touch,” then suddenly vanish completely
without answering his/her calls or texts or even replying to his/her emails afterwards. That would be
like stringing along the person and making him expect that the relationship has a future when it doesn’t.
Honesty may be difficult, but in the long run it will be much appreciated.
Respect the other person. If he/she seems eager to please but there is just something about him/her
that turns you off, don’t tell them outright that “The truth is you’re just a drag to be with,” and then
leave. That’s too brutal even if it’s the honest truth -- and there is such a thing as being too honest
sometimes. So let him/her know that you were glad to know them but you really have someone else in
mind for a long term relationship. Tell him/her you wish them well and that you hope they find the right
one to date eventually. This is more helpful and will not embarrass your date.
The key to dating is to realize that there are two possible ways to end a date – you can either agree
to date the other person again or simply end it the right way to leave both of you free to date other
people. By knowing your exit strategy well in advance, you gain that freedom you want in a much
healthier way.
