The Agar art piece is a representation of the character, “Rin.” Rin is my favorite vocaloid voicebank which is a vocal library/database or a modern singing synthesizer. I use VOCALOID5 to produce music which is AI technology that generates a highly expressive natural singing voice using editing tools and features. My Agar art representation of Rin was designed by intentionally blending four species of microbes/microbial art colors: Serratia marcescens (red), Staphylococcus epidermidis (white), Micrococcus luteus (yellow), and Pseudomonas fluorescens (unpigmented).
The process in creating the piece involved tools and bacteria that would generate blotches, thin lines, dots, and specks while also allowing enough space on the Agar canvas for the background to also represent a color. I wanted to use bacteria and the representative colors creatively to feature a young, beautiful singing multicultural artist who inspires people all around the world through very different music artforms.
Rin is a social justice Agar art piece because she is a young girl from one culture who can sing any type of song. I hoped the bacteria would blend colors in a unique way to produce shades of red, orange, yellow, white, and off white with fluorescent accents. It worked! Rin’s Agar image premiered accents of Serratia marcescens with thick and thin bold ovular shapes to elongate her face in a way that the viewer would immediately capture the spacing between her eyes and nose as if she was staring at them. The connected lines with tiny, curved specks created intricate details of her eyes, bold pupils, and nose for the dominant expressions of her personality. Rin’s eyebrows and lashes through the shadowed effect of Serratia marcescens accented her femininity in an innocent and youthful way. Various tools, even a toothpick, made soft blurs of Serratia marcescens as it blended with Staphylococcus epidermidis and Pseudomonas fluorescens which made an outline and shadows of her facial features pop from the canvas. Using fluorescents, Rin showcased darker and lighter shades also established with Serratia marcescens. I can imagine Rin’s character through her cheeks using Serratia marcescens. The softer accents using Staphylococcus epidermidis also outlined details through a shadow effect of her hair to highlight expression around her face. The last detail was a pointillism technique with Micrococcus luteus to add dimension to Rin's hair.
As an artist and an engineer, I typically use Legos to create engineering artforms. But using Agar art, I can image myself using the VOCALOID5 software to match each song with Rin's expression through my Agar art. Combining digital technology (engineering) and Agar art (Microbiology) was a very innovative way to showcase the international (Japanese, English, Chinese, Korean) multilingual artform.
