Last summer I went to an open house event at the Internet Archive in San Francisco, known for its Wayback Machine to search the internet as it was in the past.

The Internet Archive is a nonprofit digital library with the stated mission of "universal access to all knowledge". It provides free public access to collections of digitized materials, such as web sites, software applications/games, music, movies/videos, moving images, and nearly three million public-domain books. In addition to its archiving function, the Archive is an activist organization, advocating for a free and open Internet.

The Internet Archive purchased a discontinued church in San Francisco. Upstairs is the big hall, which used the be the main church hall. It now has two purposes: Event venue and datacenter. They have now 65 petabytes (65,000 GB) of disk storage, and add 2 petabytes disks per month. This shot shows one of the wings with disk humming arrays.

The Internet Archive is using our TWiki collaboration platform to coordinate work internally. Thank you for using TWiki!

I processed a balanced HDR photo from a RAW exposure, and increased the color saturation (no, you didn't!). This is a very rare exception, in this case it helped to make the image pop with the strong yellow and orange colors.

The building for the new high-performance computing centre Green IT Cube at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research has been completed after just one year of construction. The Green IT Cube will be one of the most powerful scientific computing centres in the world. It achieves its high energy and cost efficiency thanks to a special cooling system. The Green IT Cube will provide enormous computing capacity for experiments at the accelerator facilities of GSI, and, in future, FAIR.

A chiller failed, leading to a high ambient temperature, leading to 5 other chillers failing. This is what happens next.

Famous-Barr, this one aka Clayton Famous. This is a mid-century fascinating design. It now contains offices and a datacenter.

Here we see Linn setting up Brendan's new firewall. Man, a datacenter is a funky place: many long rows of humming cabinets containing hundreds and hundreds of servers. Yes folks, THIS is the Internet.

Client is Equinix. You find it on the Science Park.

Japan's Internet backbone. This is the largest data center in the world (or so they claim).

These are the connections between the switches and patch panels *after* they were cleaned up considerably.. It doesn't look too much different today (3.5 yrs later.. ) but most of the connections are defunct as our production systems have moved to a real data center.

Today I just drove by the Google Datacenter in Taulov, southern Denmark. I was aware of the establishment of several datacenters in Denmark, but it came as a surprise that it was located just 10 kilometers from my current home ...

using a bit more power though..

One of the funniest spots on the real estate tour was a place with zero air conditioning, cubes stacked tight, and this joyus reminder of Joi's first closet server room. The guy said there was a certain temptation while working on things (notice the angle of the monitor).

I have an article in the new issue of ICON magazine on the architecture, aesthetics and perception of datacenters.

Mentioned: Apple, Google, Facebook, Telehouse West (including interview with the architect, YRM), Andrew Blum, the SYNDC, William Gibson and more.

Article illustrated by the lovely Jack Featherstone.

EDIT: Article available online here.

Sealand's "datacenter". At a later point there were about 10 more machines and a couple ethernet switches, nothing more. Currently HavenCo's servers are colocated in London.
