First day of the new year with the same trains at the same locations as last year. But they do look good when all the variables come together like a train, matched power, fresh snow, clear skies and some fresh snow on the ore cars.
UP train CECPP climbs out of the Platte River valley at Elkhorn, NE. At this time C&NW power was commonplace on the coal trains that loaded in the Powder River Basin and ran over Union Pacific rails back to the home road at Council Bluffs, IA.

This old C40-8M and BC Rail wood chip hopper have spent most of their lives out on the mainline, but now they are being used for derailment training at Canadian National’s Homewood Training Campus. With CN’s C40-8M fleet being sent for scrap, it’s nice to see one still being “used”.

Yesterday I had a request for views of a DPU test train that the C&NW ran with two leased BCOL units. On May 8, 1992 the test train departed around noon from Fremont 3x1 with 150 loads. These two from the Highway 275 overpass at Fremont are three years before the C&NW became a fallen flag and a few more years before a second main track was built thru here. The BC Rail Dash8-40CM's were just something completely different to see around these parts.
There were two test trains of 150 cars each using the borrowed BCOL 4617 & 4607. The first train ran between Shawnee Junction and South Morrill. This is the second test train that ran Fremont to Boone. The units were sent home via the DW&P/CN when the tests were complete. Three C&NW SD40-2's were sent to the BCOL as payback for the 2 BCOL units. Does anyone have shots of the C&NW units on BC Rail? That would be cool to see.
