This pair of old warbonnets has been matched up for quite some time now. Yesterday they were in Superior and Grand Forks, while today they head back to Northtown.
A B32-8WH makes a rare appearance on the point of Amtrak's northbound Crescent, number 20. The 514 trailed on the 20 up to Lynchburg, but an engine failure on a Roanoke Regional led to that train borrowing the Crescent's lead unit. This gifted us with the 514 on the point all the way into DC. With the federal holiday today this train was abundantly tracked. Although cloudy, we'd be shooting almost directly into the sun here otherwise so I am grateful for the overcast skies! The location is the top of the First Street tunnel just below the US Capitol.
As another round of cold and snow hit the northern portions of Illinois, southbound CN Q11851-16 motors along with an old dash 8 on the head pin. CP Stateline, CN Waukesha Subdivision.
CN started to assign Dash 8s out of Proctor 7 years ago this month. Was cool catching them as it was something cool and different on the Missabe.
Here CN 2119 and 2131 lead 123 Utac pellet loads towards Proctor, rolling through Alborn, MN back on the frosty morning of March 19, 2011. The chug, chug of the Dash 8s was certainly different compared to every other EMD led pellet train I ever shot on the Missabe. Not long after this the Dash 8s would settle into their T-Bird assignment, but we would later get our fill of the Dash 8s rolling along the Missabe Sub. hauling limestone. So not as excited about the recent Dash 8 invasion as it sounds like it means the end to the EMDs and variety found on the Missabe.
With CN power short, to someone in charge of CN's power fleet, it seemed to them the right time to start scrapping more of the Dash-8 variants, including several barns, which will make a grown man cry. On a rainy morning, a late M399 with a pair of Dash-8s, one owned by CN and a GECX lease unit of CSX lineage make their way west through Swartz Creek with its typical long train for the UP in Salem.

While on our way to Jasper for lunch, my friend thought he heard "903, CN 2100 West" on the radio. Sure enough, it was! This turned into a very unexpected chase of the last active Dash 8 on CN. Here, CN C40-8 No. 2100 leads train No. 903 west under the stunning Mount Fitzwilliam.
C-GUKH, a De Havilland Canada DHC-8-402 Dash 8-400, landing on runway 33 at Downsview Airport in Toronto, Ontario.
Serial number 4633 was arriving as DHC4633 (De Havilland Canada) after performing its first flight. It was four hours and 35 minutes long.
This aircraft is expected to be the last Dash 8 produced at Downsview, where De Havilland has been operating for 92 years. No date has been set for a resumption of the type's production, nor has it been announced where that might take place.
Dash 8 production totaled 1,304 units.
They included 299 -100s, 105 -200s, 267 -300s and 633 -400s.
Dash 8s are getting rare on CN as the herd has been getting thinned this year. So I was pumped to see 2162 leading Toronto - Port Robinson train #421 a few minutes after sunrise on this Saturday. The dynamics are working to keep the train's speed under control as they drop down to lake level. It was the first day of a week long vacation for me and and thing's were off to a good start.
Recently out of the deadline and back in service, a trio of CSX dash 8s take L411 south through the daylighted tunnel at Eagle Cut. This time around it seems the dash 8s have largely been captive local units, but I'm not one to complain about having nice captive power in Cincinnati.
Amtrak P32-8BWH #510 is lit up perfectly right before the sunset light starts gleaming along the coastline. Hearing those old GE locomotives work while throttling up was like being born again in the early 2000s when these were very common here on the Amtrak Coast Starlight.
After waking up this morning and looking for Q582-14, I found him stopped at Tunnel Hill waiting on track work ahead of him to clear. Todays leader was one of the rare YN2 dash 8 motors just released from long term storage. 7678 still sporting its YN2 colors and looking a little battle scarred lead the 11,000 foot long train up the W&A in the early morning hours. Once they got to TH, it was a sit for 6 and a half hours and play hookie. Anyways, it was great to see this old beast still running its keep well into 2021. Details in the photos.
Also of note, is the train was doing between 1 and 4 MPH all the way between Tunnel Hill and Graysville. I left the train there so im not sure if they kept that speed all the way to Chattanooga, but I assume they did.
Dash 8s! Looking back 15 years ago today, there was quite a colorful set of power on CN's L506. This interesting duo was seen departing Northtown Yard, heading back to New Brighton, MN. CN 2108 had recently been repainted, and trailing was BCOL 4626, a C40-8M. Both of these units are now off of the CN roster. Time flies!

If the Union Pacific Railroad took requests, I would have asked for this very power consist (and in this arrangement) to lead the NPLAT along Utah's Lynndyl Sub on May 26, 1994. Pretty amazing ain't it?
CN 450 coasts quietly through the sleepy town of Huntsville on a hot summer afternoon.
Watching these former ATSF Dash 8's one by one be turned into scrap is sad. It was a perfect end to a perfect trip and its nice to have these hand-me-downs documented in their fairly short lifespan on CN

Well the lighting was not as good as yesterdays 385, todays made up for it in the power department.
Here we see 385 working Paris with BCOL 4611 GECX 7315 and CN 2117. Three different schemes, three different GE C40-8 models. Not bad!
Snow is falling and the open flame switch heaters are burning as AMTK 518 leads Hiawatha service 331 through the A2 interlocking. The 518 and Superliner would be cut off in Milwaukee for training there as I understand

Talk about a rare leader on The Borealis! For the first time in years, a B32-8, lead an Amtrak Train up towards the Twin Cities! With the sun shining, all of the colors were bright and vivid. Complete with a depot, clouds, and bluffs behind it!
