The Harmandir Sahib (Punjabi: ਹਰਿਮੰਦਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ), also Darbar Sahib (Punjabi: ਦਰਬਾਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ, Punjabi pronunciation: [dəɾbɑɾ sɑhɪb] and informally referred to as the "Golden Temple", is the holiest Sikh gurdwara located in the city of Amritsar, Punjab, India. The city was founded in 1574 by the fourth Sikh guru, Guru Ram Das. The Harmandir Sahib was designed by the fifth guru, Guru Arjan, who had the cornerstone laid by the Muslim Sufi saint Sai Hazrat Mian Mir on 28 December 1588. Guru Arjan completed the Adi Granth, the holy scripture of Sikhism, in 1604 and installed it in the gurdwara.

There are four doors to get into the Harmandir Sahib, which symbolize the openness of the Sikhs towards all people and religions. The present-day gurdwara was rebuilt in 1764 by Jassa Singh Ahluwalia with the help of other Sikh Misls. In the early nineteenth century, Maharaja Ranjit Singh secured the Punjab region from outside attack and covered the upper floors of the gurdwara with gold, which gives it its distinctive appearance and its English name.

The Harimandir Sahib is considered holy by Sikhs. The holiest text of Sikhism, the Guru Granth Sahib, is present inside the gurdwara during daytime and the holy book goes for Sukhasan during the night time. Its construction was mainly intended to build a place of worship for men and women from all walks of life and all religions to come and worship God equally. Over 100,000 people visit the holy shrine daily for worship

Commissioned by Nawab Bahawal Khan (V) 1n 1904 and was dedicated to one of wives of Nawab. Also known as Bahawal Garh.

The Golden Temple Amritsar India (Sri Darbar Sahib Amritsar) is not only a central religious place of the Sikhs, but also a symbol of human brotherhood and equality. Everybody, irrespective of cast, creed or race can seek spiritual solace and religious fulfilment without any hindrance. It also represents the distinct identity, glory and heritage of the Sikhs.

To pen-down the philosophy, ideology, the inner and outer beauty, as well as the historical legacy of Sri Darbar Sahib is a momentous task. It is a matter of experience rather than a of description.

As advised by Sri Guru Amar Dass Ji (3rd Sikh Guru), Sri Guru Ram Dass Ji (4th Sikh Guru) started the digging of Amrit Sarovar (Holy Tank) of Sri Darbar Sahib in 1577 A.D., which was later on brick-lined by Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji (5th Sikh Guru) on December 15, 1588 and He also started the construction of Sri Darbar Sahib. Sri Guru Granth Sahib (scripture of the Sikhs), after its compilation, was first installed at Sri Darbar Sahib on August 16, 1604 A.D. A devout Sikh, Baba Budha Ji was appointed its first Head Priest.

The Golden Temple Amritsar India (Sri Darbar Sahib Amritsar) has a unique Sikh architecture. Built at a level lower than the surrounding land level, The Gurudwara teaches the lesson of egalitarianism and humility. The four entrances of this holy shrine from all four directions, signify that people belonging to every walk of life are equally welcome.

The textures attracted me to make this picture. The scribbles on the walls , it's funny but reminds the human nature.

It was very hot outside but damn cool inside because of the plaster of paris construction. Very interesting place to visit.

The latest project I made for my 3D Art class, where I learned this new technique.

Gravesend, a town in Kent in the South East of England, welcomed its first Sikhs in the 1950’s. Most of the Sikhs in Gravesend arrived during the 1960’s, and there has been a steady increase in numbers ever since. Now, there are estimated to be about 15,000 Sikhs in the area, over 15 per cent of the population of Gravesham, which now includes Gravesend. Up to the late 1960’s, Sikhs gathered in a house in Edwin Street for religious services, and then moved to the Gurdwara in Clarence Place, previously a Church, which was the focus of the community until 2010.

By the late 1990’s, the community had outgrown these premises, and the Gurdwara purchased an area of land off Saddington Street, adjacent to their existing football field, Sports Centre and Education Centre. This would make it possible to combine all the main activities on one site. The Gurdwara Committee worked closely with the wider community to develop the brief for the project to construct a new Gurdwara on the site. It was clear from the beginning that the community wanted the building to reflect Indian cultural origins, and at the same time provide facilities suitable for Sikhs living in modern day Britain. The 8.5 acre site offered the chance to create a landmark project reflecting the growing confidence of British Sikhs.

Under the leadership, foresight and ambition of the late Gurdev Singh Raipur, then President, the Gurdwara Committee appointed Calfordseaden as Architects for the development, with local resident Harbhajan Singh Biring (Teja) as the lead architect. The project, funded entirely by the local community, was completed under, then President Jaspal Singh Dhesi. The Gurdwara set up their own construction company, GNG Construction Ltd, to take advantage of skills that existed in the local community. However, for the detailed stonework and woodcarving, specialist companies in India were identified to provide the relevant expertise.

A flight of marbled steps behind the Darbar Sahib descending into the sacred pool, marks the spot where, according to tradition, Guru Arjan made the first cut as the digging started in 1590. Pilgrims go down these steps to take Charanamrit or palmsful of holy water to sip.

Multan (Pakistan) is one of the oldest cities in the world and was a major center of Sufism in the middle of the last millennium. Today, the shrines of the saints are a reminder of that glorious bygone era. Here, I have captured the most magnificent of them all: the shrine of Shah Rukn-e-Alam. A masterpiece of pre-Mughal architecture, it is an octogonal structure with three tiers built entirely of red brick. Built at the site of the former Multan Fort, it commands an elevated location with sweeping views of the city below. My favorite monument in a country gifted with many.

Patan Darbar Square is situated at the center of the city of Lalitpur in Nepal. It is one of the three Durbar Squares in the Kathmandu Valley, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. One of its attraction is the ancient royal palace where the Malla Kings of Lalitpur resided.

The Durbar Square is a marvel of Newar architecture. The Square floor is tiled with red bricks.[1] There are many temples and idols in the area. The main temples are aligned opposite of the western face of the palace. The entrance of the temples faces east, towards the palace. There is also a bell situated in the alignment beside the main temples. The Square also holds old Newari residential houses. There are various other temples and structures in and around Patan Durbar Square built by the Newa People.

The square was heavily damaged on 25 April 2015 by a major earthquake.
