Wikipedia: Doi Chiang Dao (Thai: ดอยเชียงดาว) is a 2,175 metres (7,136 ft) high mountain in Chiang Dao District of Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. It is one of the highest peaks of the Daen Lao Range on the Thai side of the border.
Doi Chiang Dao is part of a limestone massif located 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) west-northwest of Chiang Dao town and less than 40 kilometres (25 mi) south of the border with Myanmar at the eastern end of the Thai highlands. This mountain is part of Chiang Dao Wildlife Sanctuary, south of Pha Daeng National Park.
Doi Chiang Dao is one of the most visited birdwatching sites in Thailand with over 300 species of birds, including rare species such as the giant nuthatch and Hume's pheasant.
Doi Chiang Dao (or Chiang Dao Hill) is in Chiang Dao Wildlife Reserve area, Amphoe Chiang Dao. Its peak is called Doi Luang Chiang Dao(which is slightly distorted from ‘Piang Dao’ or ‘at the level of the stars’, the word local people call this hill.). It is a 230-250 million years old limestone massif, which is a part of the Thanon Thong Chai Range. Doi Chiang Dao is located 2,195 meters high above sea level, regarded as the third highest peak of all peaks in Thailand, following Doi Inthanon, and Doi Pha Hom Pok. From the plain at the top of the hill, tourists can enjoy a picturesque surrounding landscape, ranging from Talay Mok (or the sea of fog) in Amphoe Chiang Dao’s side, Doi Sam Pee Nong, Doi Chiang Dao mountain range until the far away Doi Inthanon. However, climbing up to stand on the top of the hill in a large group is still not appropriate, because a variety of plant there can be destroyed.

A woman belonging to the Red Dao ethnic group in Sapa, north Vietnam. These people are descendants of the Yao people who immigrated to Vietnam from China. The women wear a distinctive red triangular turban. Like the Hmong people, they prefer to live in the highlands where they cultivate rice, corn, and other crops in the fertile soil of the mountain areas. Personally I think they look more like the Han Chinese than the Viet people.

I doubt if many visitors to this area of Thailand have seen this particular view of the Chiang Dao mountain that sits to the north of Chiang Mai overlooking the town of Chiang Dao, I've visited this area on numerous occasions trying to find an uninterrupted view of the mountain and only came across this view point quite by accident after being blocked by a herd of cows and trying my luck through a temple back exit instead.
I did eventually find a way to the main road without returning through the temple grounds but it didn't exactly do the paint work on my old pajero much good driving between the trees.
I'm not complaining though, when you have a view like this all to yourself, at the best time of the day and in complete silence except for the birdsong I don't even mind trading the odd dent.
Thank you for squeezing by here :)

Doi Luang Chiang Dao (ดอยหลวงเชียดางว). At 2,225 m, this is the highest peak in the area (and the third-highest in all of Thailand after Doi Inthanon and Doi Pha Hom Pok) and doable as a two-day trip. It is a limestone mountain in the Chiang Dao Wildlife Reserve area. Narrow plains on top of the mountain overlook spectacular views that include a sea of fog on the Chiang Dao side, Doi Sam Phi Nong, the Chiang Dao mountain range, and the far end of Doi Inthanon. The peak is cool and windy. It is full of rare highland flowers, birds, and butterflies.
Getting there: The peak is accessible on foot. At the Park Headquarters (head to Wildlife Sanctuary), guides, porters, and chartered transfers to the starting point of the trail are available. A rented local truck costs around 1200 baht and a porter is 300 baht per person (plus 200 bath ticket for the park). There are a lot of Thai people group going there, just ask to share the vehicle with them. There are no tourist facilities on Chiang Dao mountain. Visitors must bring their own sleeping bags, food, and water. If you are a very fit trekker you might be able to climb up and down in one day if you start very early. There is a small village with lodging near the start of the northern trail, easily accessible on a motorbike via paved road.
Descending the mountain is possible on the trail near Ban Tham, which is located near Chiang Dao cave. The trail is rather steep. Nevertheless, it could shorten the walking distance upon descending. It is quite difficult to climb up.
