Hydrocynus goliath is found in the Congo River Basin (including Lualaba River and Lake Upemba), and Lake Tanganyika.
A number of incidents have been reported in The Congo of this fish attacking humans. This reputation, combined with its strength, has earned it an almost mythical status among anglers, and it has been called the "greatest freshwater gamefish in the world"
According to locals living near the river, the evil spirit "Mbenga" would enter the fish and make it attack people

If you’re surfing or canoeing, you think only a shark can hurt you but sea creatures as slender as this can also inflict serious damage. While chasing prey at high speed, needlefish can leap out the water and puncture you with fatal wounds. Up on a sandy shore, this hound was still thrashing his jaws a while. Can’t imagine my hands being caught in those terrifying needles, he’ll be a crocodile doing his death row and tearing whatever is in.
I went to my mum’s place and called the rest of the family. Preparing the fish with teriyaki sauce, minced garlic and bird’s eye chili, I wrapped with banana leaf and grilled. Initially they weren’t keen to try because they saw the bones were bluish green and thought the fish was tainted or had gene mutations. I told them the unusual pigment was due to the presence of biliverdin and ate while they watched. They joined in later and like the meat so much, not even keeping the fish head for me.

Belittle Not This Lethal Fish -
Sometimes placid sometimes roaring, I like to look at the sea because it helps temporary to forget the steam and pressure cooking inside me. I was relaxing on a remote shore and fishing my lunch without success the whole morning. At the shore where the river meets the sea, the tide had dropped from 2.7m to less than a meter so I went further down the bank to recast. I was retrieving my line and suddenly there was yank so strong it caught me off guard, I almost slipped on the mossy rocks. Something at the other end was competing with me on a tug-of-war and my arms were straining. I continued to hold my grip and reeled in, a nasty looking fish with wheelbarrow eyes and needle sharp teeth flung up. I’m baffled why a hound would take my bottom rig when he usually go after live bait, here’s the full length measured against me. The fish look slender in the picture but the width is quite sizable. I have caught fishes that are much larger on my light tackle but this was non-typical with a beak like the Marabou stork.
