Koen Wauters is a dakarist. Many people know him as the singer of Clouseau, as a presenter on television or as the BV that has been racing on the Zolder circuit for thirty years. But if you really want to get to know Koen Wauters, you should go with him to the Dakar, the toughest desert rally in the world. Between 1996 and 2012, Koen took part in the Dakar twelve times. Only twice he had to give up in his eyes, still twice too many. Deep in the desert, any hint of showbiz is far away. There it is him against the endless dunes, with a copilot by his side and a sturdy Toyota Land Cruiser under his butt. In this book Koen Wauters tells how chance sent him to Dakar and how he was immediately bitten by it. This is the story of a man who calms down when the adrenaline rushes, a man whose greatest reward after a rough ride is a big hug from his mechanics. Because the Dakar is an adventure that he experiences with the entire Feryn Dakar Sport team. This is also the story of a man who turned his back on his passion when his two children grew up. Who looked death in the eye a number of times, deep in the desert and decided: no more Dakar from now on. But nothing is forever, except the call of the desert. In 2022, Koen Wauters will return to the real thing. He is far from done with the dunes. Singer and television presenter Koen Wauters (1967) made his debut as a racing driver in 1992 at the 24 Hours of Zolder. Since then he has appeared at the start of the iconic race almost every year. In 1996 Koen took part in the Dakar rally for the first time. After a ten-year break, he picked up again in 2022. In 2023 he will take part in the toughest rally in the world for the fourteenth time.
This key ring belongs to the Mammoetrallyteam that no longer exists. But Martin van den Brink still drives. His son is now also behind the wheel and is doing very well.
I received the key ring during one of the Dakar Preprologues. An event that no longer exists.
Participation in the rally is expensive, perhaps too expensive. No Dutch motorcycles this year, but 6 participants in the challenger class, also 6 Dutch teams participating in the cars and the classics. A disappointing list of 8 Dutch teams for the trucks. There used to be 3x as many.
The adventure is three days underway, so I can still enjoy it for a while.
I saved the photo in RAW and edited it into a photo.
Background is a photo of the Abu Dhabi desert where I was in 2019.

Beaches become crowded at the end of the day when people come after work / school to train and play. Wresting and football are the two most popular sports.
Centre of Dakar, Senegal. Some very interesting, vibrant markets. There are sheep everywhere you look at the moment in Senegal.
