Inside the main Sanctuary temple at the pilgrimage site of Lalish, preserving the tomb of Sheikh Adi, main figure of the Yezidi faith.

The place is wrapped with knotted prayer cloths, that pilgrims may tie and untie, thus releasing the previous pilgrim's wish to be granted.

Throughout their history, the Yazidi were always heavily persecuted. The latest was in 2014, when Daesh (ISIS) killed many Yazidis and kidnapped girls, young women and boys. Boys to be brainwashed and trained as warriors and girls to be sold as (sex) slaves. The genocide caused many Yazidis to be forced to leave their ancestral lands in Northern Iraq.

Souvenirs de guerre. Cette photo a été prise il y a deux ans dans les ruines de la vieille ville de Mossoul. La guerre était intense. Les civils étaient libérés par la Golden Division, maison par maison.

4th Plinth artwork at Trafalgar Square, London, 2018-2020. By Micheal Rakowitz. Recreation of the ancient winged bull statue (Lammasu) destroyed by Daesh. This mythological beast guarded the Assyrian city of Nineveh in Iraq for over a thousand years. Recreated using 6,000 empty cans of date syrup, it also references Daesh's destruction of Palm Date agriculture in Iraq.

Lamassu. This winged bull and protective deity guarded the entrance to Nergal Gate of Nineveh (near modern day Mosul) from c700 BC until it was destroyed by Daesh in 2015.

This year’s artwork is 'The Invisible Enemy Should Not Exist' by Michael Rakowitz.

Kurdish soldiers attacking ISIS near Mosul

I was thinking about Salvini, Daesh, Trump, Brexit, Vox, Catalonia, Le Pen, Putin, Netanyahu, Siria, Maduro, climate change, Bolsonaro, Ortega, Kin Jong Un, Pegida, algorithms in social networks, Orbán... when I was editing the photograph. That's the reason why of the pesimistic title.

One of the temples in Lalish. The conical-roofed shrine in the background contains the tomb of Sheikh Adi ibn Musafir, the most important saint in Yazidi religion. The Yazidi consider him an avatar of Tawûsê Melek, which means "Peacock Angel".

His tomb at Lalish, Kurdistan, is a focal point of Yazidi pilgrimage.

Most Yazidis live in the Nineveh province of Northern Iraq, Iraqi Kurdistan.

Some peshmergas take me to the front lines of the war against ISIS. I find myself in the Taza area, just south of Kirkuk, on the road to Baghdad.

According to them, very few journalists come here. Some even said that I was the only was they saw. Nonetheless, it is a key strategic location. It is very dangerous there since Kirkuk is divided: Kurds in the north, ISIS in the south. All along the front lines you can see different units roaming about little traditional houses. Some are kept by old Kurdish vets from the 1980s wars.

Many vets have returned to war, despite being well past middle-aged and having children and grandchildren. Some even behind comfortable lives in Europe to come back, like a Swiss colonel I met. For them, it is their duty to fight for their region. Despite being autonomous and having a large secessionist movement, Kurdistan is not recognized as a state distinct from Iraq. “Some terrorists come along and now the whole world calls them the ‘Islamic State’,” complains one peshmerga, “For decades we have been trying to make the state of Kurdistan and we’ve gotten nothing!”

They have very few weapons, most of them are pre-Cold War AK47s. Some even date back to 1960. They still work, but the Kurdish forces ask for more efficient guns since ISIS has the latest weapons taken (or given) from the Iraqi army who in turn was supplied by coalition forces.

Many vets have only one working eye. The other was lost in previous wars. Once night falls, it becomes very difficult to monitor the 1000km long border. They don’t even have night vision equipment.

Last week it rained for 5 days, and it was impossible to see or hear anything. Some ISIS guys tried to gain territory, but the Kurds successfully fought them off. Their 4 wheel drives were stuck in the mud while ISIS’s brand new hummers were able to move about without issue. From the front line you can see ISIS flags. Since they told me to pack light, I didn’t bring a zoom lens. Sorry! You can see the smoke from their kitchen and even see men running from house to house.

ISIS is only 500 meters from the Kurdish position but nobody seems afraid. Peshmerga know that death is part of their fate, and even if they look like an army from another century, they will defend themselves and their country to the very end. For them, it is the highest honor to die for Kurdistan.

They protect the Baghdad road, but a few weeks ago lost it. After heavy fighting, they regained it, killing 3 Chechen ISIS fighters in the process.

Since peshmerga don’t have armored cars, it is very dangerous for them to go around safely.

The car I took to go on the front lines was very slow and made in the 80s. If we were chased by ISIS cars, we wouldn’t have stood a chance. In one day, all the materiel I saw included AK47s, a tank, an RPG, and a few gun old machines. Even if the pehsmergas say that this equipment works well, they are disappointed not to receive new ones, as Europe and USA promised.

The day after my visit, France made lot of bombings in the area, as ISIS was too close. Peshmergas take a lot of pictures, not only for souvenirs, but also to fight ISIS on the new front: social media.

They fear the roads they do not know well as ISIS pays the local farmers to put mines. Even in times of war, peshmergas are among the most welcoming people in the world. They regularly offer food and drinks.

When it was time for me to go back to the safety of Erbil, circumstances changed. The north road was closed because of an ISIS attack. The only way out was to send me through the south road that crossed Kirkuk. Let’s just say that safety there was not ideal. I had to hide my camera, and we crossed Kirkuk with an escort of armed peshmergas and a civilian car.

The soldiers were all nervous since Kirkuk is very dangerous, especially at the check points. As soon as a car was driving next to ours for too long, they were shouting at the driver to go away.

If a man was crossing the road too slowly, they threatened to hit him. These methods, employed by ISIS suicide bombers, have claimed the lives of hundred in Kirkuk. Once on the Kurdish side, they found a Kurdish taxi driver to bring me safely back to Erbil.

In memory of all victims of daesh, not only in Paris, but also in Ankara, the Sinaï, Beirut and all other places!

But, anyhow, I'm not afraid and I'm determent to live my life as I want to!

Because if people yield for tyranny, they lose more than life and body, than the light will dim. (free to a poem of H.M. van Randwijk)

This Yazidi girl was sold to several men in the three years of imprisonment under Daesh, but she managed to escape in a daring way around Mosul, where she was used as a human shield during the final battle. It’s really hard to tell the suffering of Yazidi people. When I met these little women and listened to their terrible stories, I were literally paralyzed.

A Syrian Family Inside Her Tent In Qushtapa Refugee Camp, Erbil, Kurdistan, Iraq.

I first met them one year ago, in the same camp. They were just arriving, displaced by El Hassad army bombings on their syrian village. They just lived under a tent, without nothing and they just had some twins babies. Now they have built concrete walls around their tent, have TV, electricity... They will remain in this camp for years and years. The twins are called Hawler (the name of Kurdistan capitale in kurdish) and Kurdistan. Everything is overpriced in the camp and they spend huge amount of money just to feed the babies. Now, the father is in charge of the tea distribution in the camp. A serious job for those refugees. They are more than 1 million like them in Kurdistan.

===============================================

The baroque church of Alguaire, north of Lleida, tells us of the hatred and destruction of war, specially the civil wars. It was destroyed in the summer of 1936 at the beginning of the spanish civil war by anarchist militias, I presume (I only know the year, but arround Lleida the anarchists were the f###ing masters that summer, so...). As ALMOST ALL of the churches in Catalonia, Alguaire's was burnt, and even destroyed. In other towns like Vic or Manresa there were other churches demolished stone by stone, even when there was shortage of soldiers in the front against the fascist forces. It all reminds me of the current hatred by the daesh against everything not acording to their sick mind.

After the war the church was "rebuilt", sort of. I supose it was the harsh times of the post-war years that dictated such a messy patch. Yet it it's a much more powerful reminder of that bloody war.

In a way, it reminds me of the Phantom of the Opera.

Some years ago when I was traveling along the silk road, I could visit Palmyra, an ancient caravan city, located in Syria. Now I am worried that this important historical place can be destroyed by El Daesh. I hope the UNESCO can do something to avoid its destruction.
