The Dornier Aerodyne (also referred to as "Lippisch-Dornier Aerodyne") was the designation of a "wingless" VTOL unmanned aircraft. Conceived by Alexander Lippisch, it was developed and built by Dornier on behalf of the Federal German Ministry of Defense. Lippisch was part of the team. The first flight took place on 18 September 1972. The development ended on 30 November 1972 after successful hovering-flight testing with the aircraft. Experimentation did not continue due to lack of interest by the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces), and/or the desire to undertake plans for manned helicopters.

 

The principle behind the Aerodyne is the combination of lift and thrust production in a single construction unit and flow channel, i.e. a ducted fan. Flaps at the end of the fan divert the outflowing air to produce lift, thrust, or a combination of both. As a result, the Aerodyne could be steered and flown in the entire range between hovering and full-forward flight.

 

For forward flight, the Aerodyne had a conventional tail unit at the rear, which allowed for pitch and yaw control. The equipment was unmanned and operated by remote control.

 

It was intended to be a land- or ship-supported drone (UAV) for aerial reconnaissance.

The Dornier Do 128-6 is a version of the Do 28D equipped with turboprop engines. Its piston engines were loud and required AvGas, which is difficult to obtain in developing countries, for example. With the installation of two Pratt & Whitney PT6 turbines, the aircraft became quieter and could be operated with better available kerosene.

 

The aircraft on display is the prototype of the aircraft. It first flew with turbines in 1980 and was initially made available to the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI). In the winter of 1983/84 the aircraft was used in Antarctica as POLAR 1. In 1986, the TU Braunschweig replaced its Do 28D with the Do 128-6 of the AWI and used it as a test aircraft and "flying classroom" until the end of 2021.

 

The "D-IBUF" was able to transport up to 500 kg of measurement technology. Outside, the nose pole in particular testified to the use of research. Additional external loads were added as required. The aircraft was used in research on meteorological phenomena and in numerous flight tests.

The Dornier 228 Polar was a fleed of 4 specialised expedition aircrafts of this type operated by the Alfred Wegener Institute for arctic research.It was able to operate under so called "whiteout" conditions in an arctic landscape.
