How do you connect with an iconic, two-day music festival — 365 days a year? We answered with an unforgettable online experience.
A playful interface — featuring an exploding lollipop and later, interplanetary exploration —offered forums, contests, streaming video and dynamic media feeds. A custom scheduler let users create, save and share their favorite festival line-ups.
Our work earned a Silver ADDY in 2006 and a Gold in 2007. It was nominated for a Webby both years, and won the Webby’s People’s Voice Award in 2007 with more than 400,000 votes.
The final implemented version gave all the attention on the stories as originally intended and the first story highlights the goals of PRISM to new visitors. Additionally, refinement was made towards the overall look of the Flash interface.
One challenge with this design was the DHTML implementation of the global navigation. Dropdowns flickered above the Flash frame causing a lot of friction in the user's ability to jump to other pages. As a result, the same navigation was implemented within the Flash frame to maintain a smooth and consistent experience.
A floating ad is a type of rich media Web advertisement that appears uninitiated, superimposed over a user-requested page, and disappears or becomes unobtrusive after a specific time period (typically 5-30 seconds). The most basic floating ads simply appear over the Web page, either full screen or in a smaller rectangular window. They may or may not provide a means of escape, such as a close button. More sophisticated versions can come in any shape or size and include sound, animation, and interactive components. Floating ads use a variety of technologies, such as a combination of Flash and dynamic HTML (DHTML), and may have the ability to display differently according to the user's browser capabilities. United Virtualities and Eyeblaster are two advertising media companies that offer floating ads.

En lezenaar die verrijdbaar is zodat je je geen breuk hoeft te tillen, een eenvoudige en toch perfecte stoel, een stoel met klassieke achterpoten - ter gelegenheid van de Internationale Meubelbeurs in Utrecht heeft weer een aantal vormgevers een prijs gekregen. Eéndagsgeluk of levert het ze ook echt wat op?

Titus Hertzberger (29) zal zeker in de wolken zijn met de Prijs voor de jonge ontwerpers, die hij ontving voor zijn lezenaar. De onderscheiding en de vijfduizend gulden vielen hem ten deel vanwege de vernieuwende elementen in het ontwerp - de verrijdbaarheid, de wegdraaiende zijbladen en de boekvorm van het blad. 'Een gebalanceerde belijning van het totaalontwerp', prees de jury, die onder andere bestond uit de ontwerpers Gerard van den Berg, Jan des Bouvrie en Gerrit Schilder.
Of Hertzberger zoveel wijzer zal worden van deze prijs, is nog de vraag. Jurylid Gerrit Schilder was vorig jaar de gelukkige winnaar met een stoel, die toen werd geroemd als origineel voorbeeld van alternatief materiaalgebruik. Over de stoel, een tot comfortable zitkuip gevormde rubber deurmat, was volgens de jury zo goed nagedacht “dat hij direct in produktie is te nemen”. Ondanks deze aanbeveling lukte het Schilder niet een producent ervoor te interesseren. “Hij ligt verkeerd in de markt”, kreeg de ontwerper van de meeste fabrikanten te horen.
Met zijn collega-juryleden stelt Schilder dit jaar vast dat jonge ontwerpers zich soms te veel verliezen in het doen van leuke vondsten. Deze inventiviteit gaat volgens de jury ten koste van de functie van het ontwerp.
Dat gold niet voor de stoel 'Toto' van Ellen Janssen (30) die een eervolle vermelding kreeg omdat het meubel volgens de jury zeer goed zit, licht van gewicht en goed te tillen is. De stoel straalt door zijn klassieke voornaamheid een grote elegantie uit, aldus de jury. Het ontwerp van 'Toto' werd ook bekroond met de Prijs voor de industriële produktkwaliteit, “vanwege het effectieve en economische materiaalgebruik”. Een fraai en goed hanteerbaar meubel, vond de jury. Hugo Timmermans kreeg in deze categorie een eervolle vermelding voor zijn 'Kruiskast' (licht, goed te vervoeren en gemakkelijk te monteren), Marcel Douwe Dekker kreeg dezelfde onderscheiding voor een verlichtingsornament (geestig en inventief gebruik van industrieel vervaardige onderdelen).
