ZLT Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik, a German-based company, develops, builds and markets
the Zeppelin NT. This modern airship is a descendant from the helium-filled aircraft that
flew around the beginning of the previous century.
The new Zeppelin NT is a unique piece of engineering. It is 75m long, 19.5m wide,
weighs only 1,900kg and can reach a maximum speed of 125km per hour.
The Zeppelin NT is a multi-purpose passenger airship, certified by European and US-American
aviation authorities to transport up to 15 passengers or up to 2 tons of mission equipment.
Large black bird with a vertically-fanned tail and massive strong legs and feet. Obvious red head. Male develops large yellow pendulous neck wattles (mauve in Cape York subspecies). Endemic resident of tropical rainforests along the eastern coast of Australia. It can be a common in cosmopolitan parks and gardens in places such as Cairns, Brisbane. Roosts at night very high up in trees. Builds large nest-mounds of leaves and mulch. (eBird)
--------------
The first time we saw this amazing bird, it was very dark and very distant. This time, it was ridiculously tame and wouldn't get far enough away to let me get a full-body shot. I later changed to a shorter lens and got some complete shots which show their unusual tail. Will post one later.

Snow Bunting - Plectrophenax Nivalis
Snow buntings are large buntings, with striking 'snowy' plumages. Males in summer have all white heads and underparts contrasting with a black mantle and wing tips. Females are a more mottled above. In autumn and winter birds develop a sandy/buff wash to their plumage and males have more mottled upperparts.
Globally, they breed around the arctic from Scandinavia to Alaska, Canada and Greenland and migrate south in winter. They are a scarce breeding species in the UK, in Scotland, making them an Amber List species. They are more widespread in winter in the north and east when residents are joined by continental birds.
They are listed under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife & Countryside Act.
The snow bunting lives in very high latitudes in the Arctic tundra. There is no apparent limit to its northern range, while the southern range is limited by the duration of daylight, which influences their reproductive activity. This species is found in the high Arctic tundra of North America, Ellesmere Island, Iceland, higher mountains of Scotland, Norway, Russia, North Greenland, Siberia, Novaya Zemlya, and Franz Josef Land. During the winter, this bird migrates to the circumglobal northern temperate zone including the south of Canada, north of the United States, north of Germany, Poland, Ukraine, and east to central Asia. During the last ice age, the snow bunting was widespread throughout continental Europe.
During the breeding period the snow bunting looks for rocky habitats in the Arctic Since the vegetation in the tundra is low growing, this bird and its nestlings are exposed to predators, and in order to ensure the survival of its offspring, the snow bunting nests in cavities in order to protect the nestlings from any threat. During this period, buntings also look for a habitat rich in vegetation such as wet sedge meadows and areas rich in dryas and lichens. In the winter, they look for open habitats such as farms and fields where they feed on seeds in the ground.

Develop an attitude of gratitude, and give thanks for everything that happens to you, knowing that every step forward is a step toward achieving something bigger and better than your current situation. Brian Tracy
Here's how it started:
'A few decades after the Portuguese colonised Madeira in 1420, they developed a system that differed in some respects from anything that had gone before. By felling the forests after which they named the island (madeira is Portuguese for wood), they created, in this uninhabited sphere, a blank slate – a terra nullius – in which a new economy could be built. Financed by bankers in Genoa and Flanders, they transported enslaved people from Africa to plant and process sugar. They developed an economy in which land, labour and money lost their previous social meaning and became tradable commodities.'

Luckily, I remembered I had this small Corgi Ovaltine delivery van toy. The product was developed by Albert Wander in Bern Switzerland. They opened a factory at Kings Langely and I remember travelling past it on numerous train journeys as a child. Later in life I used to buy tons and tons of malt extract for inclusion in the cereal Shreddies.
Fishing boat with fishermen's equipment on the river bank in the morning at Karnafuli river (Kaptai). When fishermen fish in the fog-covered river in the winter morning, an unearthly environment is created. It's like a heavenly morning.
The name of the traditional river of ancient Chittagong is Karnafuli. This river is an immortal witness of thousands of years of history. Starting from the eastern hills, this river has merged with the Bay of Bengal on the wide western side.
The scenery of the two banks of Karnafuli is amazing. Everyone's eyes will be closed. The only hydropower plant in Bangladesh has been built on Karnafuli.
Chittagong, the holy land of Bar Auliya and the green land of natural beauty, has developed on the banks of Karnafuli. One of the main reasons for this beauty of Chittagong is Karnafuli. The port built on the banks of this river is economically important. Chittagong port is very old. The river is losing its romance. The river is only being attacked because of the profiteering people.

This was one of those sunsets that developed from a subtle orange glow on the horizon to a fully ablaze pink sky within about 60 seconds. It was a beautiful thing to witness and I felt honoured to be in the right place at the right time

Although this looks very much like the endangered Bay Checkerspot butterfly also indigenous to Mt. Diablo, The Variable has a much larger range. The variable checkerspot or Chalcedon checkerspot (Euphydryas chalcedona) is a butterfly in the family Nymphalidae. It is found in western North America, where its range stretches from Alaska in the north to Baja California in the south and extends east through the Rocky Mountains into Colorado, Montana, New Mexico and Wyoming. The butterfly is usually brown or black with extensive white and yellow checkering and some red coloration on the dorsal wing.
Adult butterflies feed on nectar from flowers while larvae feed on a variety of plants including snowberry (Symphoricarpos), paintbrush (Castilleja), Buddleja, Diplacus aurantiacus and Scrophularia californica, photos of which are or will be posted at this site.
The variable checkerspot is a food source for many avian predators. Due to a larval diet rich in iridoid compounds such as catalpol, the butterfly has developed a strategy of unpalatability to deter avian predation. In addition, coloring plays a part in the defense strategy of the butterfly; intense red coloration deters predators from attacking them.
I have been tracking these and the Bay Variable Checkerspots since I found my first at the junction of Castle Rock and Buckeye Trails on Mt. Diablo in 2009. They're not easy to find and with a mating period of a day, don't really live long enough to "follow."
Line_up 8 pcs paperwork, oilcolor, graphite, transport Box 2014. The “line_up“ is a paperwork series I developed since 2010. The “liners” are made out of paper (Din A3/A4),
oil paint and graphite. The theme is the hermetical laws of polarity and movement. There is no ending and no beginning in any direction, just an endless movement. You have the possibility to arrange the papers like you want and that makes it an endless playground for my photo-work and the eyes of the viewers.

A lovely rustic hut we discovered on one of our hikes this autum in South Tyrol, Italy ... I can imagine sitting there, enjoying the evening sun on the bench with a good book and maybe a glas of fine wine ... and perhaps some fairies or elves would join me, too ;))
Good to be back :))
Have a lovely 3rd Sunday of Advent - and Happy Sliders Sunday

"Cascade Complex" in Yerevan is an architectural complex on the hillside, located north of city center.
Externally, they look as great stairs, decorated with flowerbeds, fountains, sculptures and contemporary chaczkarami (plates with a carved Armenian cross). The name comes from fountains that flow down of cascade.
The first caskades project at the beginning of 20th century was developed by architect Alexander Tamanian. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of joining Armenia to the USSR, in 1970 this great construction project was returned. Work began only in 1980, but after the earthquake in 1988 and the breakup of the Soviet Union, the work was stopped.
In 2001, the building was taken over by Armenian millionaire, philanthropist and collector Gerard Cafesjian who lived in the United States. He decided to transform the whole into a museum with an exhibition of modern art.

W 2001 roku budowę przejął żyjący w Stanach Zjednoczonych ormiański milioner, filantrop i kolekcjoner Gerard Cafesjian. Zdecydował się przekształcić całość w muzeum z ekspozycją sztuki nowoczesnej.

Well, today I learned not to mix too many light sources. A red background with a bluish foreground light makes for very muddy colors. I appreciate digital cameras but wish I had the opportunity to learn how to develop film in a dark room. I stumbled across these negatives the other day and knew that I had to use them in some way.

Happy Caturday!
Lions are commonly seen in most parts of Botswana. Even though lions don't like water, sightings of lions in the northern Okavango Delta are spectacular. The lions have learned to thrive there - mainly due to the large buffalo population.
The Lions of Botswana have torn up the rule book as we know it. Lions don't like water, lions seldom, if ever, hunt elephants, hippos and lions need water to survive - these are some of the ideas that we have learnt over the years. In Botswana lions take to the water regularly, lions do hunt elephant and hippo and in some areas of the country lions can go for months without drinking water.
Home ranges of the lions vary in size for the same reasons - availability of food. In the arid areas the home ranges will be much larger and a great deal of overlapping with neighboring prides occurs.
Lions in the Okavango Delta are adept at negotiating the channels and floodplains in order to hunt. Prey moves between the islands and lions have to cross the water to follow. Because of this water activity the front quarters of the Okavango Delta lions are more developed than those of other lions. From buffalo to hippo and even adult elephant. there are prides that have adapted to preying on all. – Internet

Are we having an irruption this year of Cedar Waxwings? It may be my imagination, but it seems like I am seeing more than usual. And many of them have not yet developed the signature red waxy wingtips, indicating they are still young. This one was seen at WSU Vancouver.

The oldest soap in the world, Aleppo soap was originally developed in the city of Aleppo 3,500 years ago. With the civil war its production was stopped.
Meanwhile a part is made in Lebanon, which also suffered the civil war.
Now Lebanon is a model of living together. Let’s hope the same for Syria.
