It's been a while since I've taken a photo of a sun-star.

Taking photos of sun-stars is always a lot easier when you're lying on your back. :)

European Dancehall Queen Contest

Dancehall Queen is a Jamaican style of dance. Its origins are deep in the cariebbean culture and communities. It spread around the world in various Jmaican communities, like in the USA or in Canada. Far behind this situation is the one in Europe, where the movement isn't yet well known. An international DHQ contest has been held in Montego Bay, Jamaica, for the last ten years, while there has been only one European contest in 2007.

In april 2008, in Bologna, Italy, there was a second EDHQ contest. It attracted DHQs from nine different countries: Italy, France, Holland, Germany, UK, Austria, Finland, Poland and Spain. It was a one day event. All the DHQs arrived in Bologna during the same day of the contest and flew back to their countries in the night after the contest.

This was the first occasion for many of them to meet. They usually keep in contact by web communities, such as Myspace. After a few minutes together in the venue they became very close, supporting each other in every moment of the competition.

They spent most of their time in the backstage, a tiny tent just behind the stage. They went on stage for a general reharsal and again in the backstage for a costume change.

Since their arrival in the venue the tension rose. Through moments of relax, make up sessions and waiting they tried to concentrate on the upcoming show.

In a few more than 45 minutes and a few rounds the judges crowned the winner: Champagne from the UK. She enjoyed the victory dancing together with Amzone and Suna, the second and the third.

All their tension was gone now and DHQs prepared their baggage. Some went to the hotel for a few hour of rest after a long day. Some other went directly to the airport.

Over 12 hours their feelings changed, from happiness to exhaustion, and drove them through the contest.

This is the front of The Greyhound on Park Lane, Croydon, opposite the Fairfield Halls and Croydon College. I took this photograph on 01 November 2015. The Greyhound was a famous live music venue and many bands played there during the 1970s including David Bowie, who played a gig there on 25 June 1972 as part of the Ziggy Stardust tour. The support band was Roxy Music and it was reported that a thousand people were turned away.

I first went to The Greyhound when I was sixteen to see The Ramones play on 29 May 1977 on their first UK tour. The Ramones were a fantastic live band, belting out short 1-2-3-4 rock ‘n’ roll songs to a dancehall full of young pogoing punks. Joey Ramone, the tall and skinny lead singer was dressed in a leather biker’s jacket his face hidden under a mop of hair and sunglasses.

The support band that night was another American band called Talking Heads, also on their first UK tour. Not many people could be bothered to drag themselves from the bar to watch them, but I was curious and stood with a few others at the front of the stage. The band were very nervous playing in front of a bunch of punks in the depths of South London. At the time I wasn't that impressed by Talking Heads, but later that year they released Psycho Killer which was a classic single.

I became a regular at the Greyhound’s Sunday night gigs throughout 1977 when the bill was dominated by punk bands. I saw some great gigs there by Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Buzzcocks, Generation X, The Jam, Tom Robinson Band and many others.

The Greyhound later became the Blue Orchid nightclub and finally closed in 2004.

"girl get yourself in the damned mini bus"

Barrington Levy - On My Telephone

this photo has nothing to do with girls, Jamaica or 1980's Dancehall reggae .

It does however feature a dodgy Chinese mini bus and an even dodgier mountain pass.

The general consensus was that everyone get off the bus at this juncture.

all obliged, apart from a few dudes who didn't seem to care there was a 4000 meter drop off to the right of the bus.

It wobbled its way across, we all got back on and kept going.
