Gathering of elephants at Minneriya NP, Sri Lanka

During the drier months of June to September a spectacular event happens at Minneriya national park, known as the 'Gathering'. Up to 300 elephants congregate around the ancient Minneriya water tank which provides an important water source when many other lakes and tanks have dried out. Interestingly, the elephants partaking in the gathering are not all home to Minneriya. Many come from the areas around the park, including from as far as Kaudulla national park.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Sigiriya is truly unique not only for its remaining ruins, but also for its stunning location.

The palace ruins on the summit of Sigiriya rock consist of several massive brick walls and pools, which were carved into the solid rock, and the sheer drop-offs on any side of the summit offer panoramic views in all directions.

The entry to the summit leads through massive Lion's claws which are the remains of what was once a much larger structure. In ancient times, the stairway lead straight into the mouth of a lion, and the name Sigiriya, which literally means Lions Rock, stems from this impressive monument.

The Royal gardens below the rock are surrounded by the outer moat and are among the most important and spectacular features of Sigiriya, and are considered to be among the oldest landscaped gardens in the world.

Minneriya national park is centered around the historical Minneriya tank built by King Mahasen in third century AD. It is an important dry season feeding ground for the elephant populations of Matale, Polonnaruwa, and Trincomalee districts. Along with Kaudulla and Girithale, Minneriya forms one of the 70 Important Bird Areas (IBAs) of Sri Lanka. The main habitats of Minneriya consist of several types, including low-canopy montane forests, intermediate high-canopy secondary forests, scrublands, abandoned chena lands, grasslands, rocky outcrops, and wetlands. The national park's faunal species include 24 species of mammals, 160 species of birds, 9 species of amphibians, 25 species of reptiles, 26 species of fish, and 75 species of butterflies.

The falls have been named after the demon king Ravana, and is connected to the famous Indian epic Ramayana. According to the Ramayana, Ravana kidnapped princess Sitha and hid her in the caves behind the waterfall, now simply known as the Ravana Ella Cave. The reason for the kidnapping is said to be an act of revenge for slicing off the nose of his sister by prince Rama, Sitha's husband, and his brother Laxmana.

At the time, the cave was surrounded with thick forests in the midst of wilderness and extremely difficult to get to.

The waterfall is 25 meters (82 ft) high and cascades from an oval-shaped concave rock outcrop. During the wet season, the waterfall turns into what is said to resemble an areca flower with withering petals.

Minneriya national park is an important habitat for large water birds such as lesser adjutant, painted stork, and spot-billed pelican, as well as for many resident and migrant bird species. Little cormorants, great white pelicans, ruddy turnstones, and grey herons are other water birds frequently spotted here. Among the endemic birds are Sri Lanka junglefowsl, Sri Lanka hanging parrost, brown-capped babblers, Sri Lanka grey hornbills, black-crested bulbuls and crimson-fronted barbets.
